Topic: Interleukin 5

  interleukins - multiple sclerosis encyclopaedia
Interleukins (also called lymphokines) are a sub-group of small soluable proteins called cytokines which function as chemical messengers between cells.
The role of interleukins is to mediate and control the immunologic and inflamatory response.
Interleukins are largely secreted by white blood cells (leukocytes) and received by receptors in others.

Interleukin 5 (IL-5) has an enhancing effect on IL-4 induced immunoglobulin E (IgE) synthesis.
Soluble interleukin 5 (IL-5), but no interleukin 3 (IL-3) and granulocyte-macrophage colony- stimulating factor (GM-CSF), was detected in sera from all patients.
Interleukin 4 (IL 4)- induced IgE production by peripheral blood lymphocytes and tonsil cells from normal donors was enhanced in a dose-dependent fashion by IL 5.

Pneumothorax-associated pleural eosinophilia in mice is interleukin-5 but not interleukin-13 dependent CHEST - Find ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Study objectives: To establish a murine model of pneumothorax-associated pleural eosinophilia and to examine the role of interleukin (IL)-5 and IL-13 in the pathogenesis of this reaction.
Since eotaxin (10) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (5) levels have been reported to be higher in EPEs than in the non-EPEs, it is reasonable to hypothesize that IL-13 plays a role in pneumothorax-associated pleural eosinophilia.
The purpose of the present study was to establish a routine model of pneumothorax-associated pleural eosinophilia.
