Interlingua is an international auxiliary language developed by the International Auxiliary Language Association with financing from the Rockfeller Foundation, The Carnegie Corporation, the Research Corporation and principally the family of the heiress Alice Vanderbilt Morris and her husband and children, who were deeply interested in the problem of international communication.
The grammar of Interlingua is a minimum grammar for use of the international vocabulary of the dictionary as a language.
Interlingua represents the common lexical heritage of the European languages and is immediately comprehensible to millions, and is easily learned.

Interlingua - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Interlingua uses the words which are most common today in the Latin and Western languages, which makes it very natural in spite of being a constructed language.
Interlingua may be the second-most spoken international auxiliary language (IAL) after Esperanto, although the estimated number of speakers overlaps with that of Ido.
Interlingua supporters point out that Esperanto, despite being based on slavic, germanic, and romance languages, has some of its strongest communities in China and Japan, where the local languages are totally unrelated to the Indo-European languages.

Romanica - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is similar to the planned language Interlingua, of which it is sometimes described as a variant.
Romanica's vocabulary is mostly drawn from the Interlingua - English Dictionary (IED), published by The International Auxiliary Language Association (IALA) in 1951, and used as the basis of the international language Interlingua.
Romanica's grammar is derived from elements common to the Romance languages: adjectives agree in number and gender with their nouns, verbs are conjugated, and so on.

The price of a translation is the result of several factors: Language combination, quality, volume, delivery times, data file conversions.
The translation of language combinations in western and eastern European languages is usually more economical than the translation of northern European language combinations and Asian languages.
The basis for the quality of a translation are knowledge of the language, cultural know-how, technical know-how, technical equipment, mastery of various software programmes, speed, accuracy, reliability, availability, confidential handling of documents, archiving and documentation of translation.

The Problem of Function and Structure in Interlingua   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The Interlingua forms – in the present case vita and vital – follow the simple rule that all their correspondences in the contributing languages as well as all the direct derivatives must be evolvable from them by a repetition of the processes to which those correspondences owe their identity.
In other words, the Interlingua form is the nearest common historical or theoretical ancestor of its variants in the contributing languages with the proviso that it must also suffice to explain the derivatives in the contributing languages.

Interlingua differs from other international languages in that its elaboration was prompted not simply by the desire to provide a universal language but essentially by the finding that such a language could utilize a number of the phenomena observed in linguistic research.
Interlingua is represented by an international organization (the Union Mundial pro Interlingua) and by associations in the Scandinavian countries, France, Britain, Switzerland, the United States, and elsewhere.
The most important language of the first kind is Latin, which has prolonged its natural span of life over a thousand years by serving as a universal language to the world of learning throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and, till this day, to the Roman Catholic Church.

A national language used as a secondary world language implies on the part of its speakers a claim to universal superiority, and no people is in a position to make such a claim and force all parties concerned to agree.
Extranational languages have never attained their range as the result of man's desire to understand his neighbors across the border and to avoid or overcome friction, war, and hatred, which are often regarded as unavoidable results of our numerous language borders.
Actually languages of more than nationally restricted use have always been established in their role as secondary or auxiliary languages in foreign parts by potent needs either of a purely utilitarian or of a generally cultural kind.

Interlingua is the name given by a body called I.A.L.A. to its compilation, published in 1951, of the major part of the common element in the languages of the Western civilization.
Other major languages were excluded, since their use as "controls," while greatly complicating the procedure of extraction, would not have had noticeable effects on its results.
The grammar of Interlingua, in stark contrast to those of other "international languages", is also based on objective assessment of what is in fact international, rather than on what theorists thought ought to be so.

Interlingua terms are defined in an extensive taxonomy of approximately 50,000 concepts called the Ontology.
This is effected in three steps: first building for each language a taxonomy of the linguistic generalizations required to analyze and generate that language, then organizing the domain entities in terms of that taxonomy, and finally merging the result with the existing interlingua ontology in a well-defined way.
This methodology is based not on intuitive grounds about what is and is not `true' about the world, which is a question of language-independence, but instead on practical concerns, namely what information the analysis and generation programs require in order to perform their tasks, a question of language-neutrality.

Essentially, IALA sought to create a scientifically based international language, since no compromise between the Esperantists and the various naturalist schools seemed imminent; after 1943 the new language was more or less ready, and in 1951 Gode published the first Interlingua dictionary.
Interlingua boasts of its freedom from diacritical marks, but at the same time imitates the capricious accents of the Romance languages.
But the method of Gode's Interlingua is a return to the "compromise pan-European" of Esperanto and Ido (in which the word derivation and orthography are compromises between the bigger European languages).

He began work on his planned language, which he would eventually call "Lingvo Internacia", as a junior in high school, and eventually published the first textbook of the language (for speakers of Russian) in the 1887, at the time of his marriage and early in his medical career.
Whether it is superior or inferior to other planned languages is an open question, since none of the others have gathered a great enough number of speakers for a long enough period of time to provide evidence one way or the other.
Some speakers of Esperanto have become so enthusiastic about the language that they have chosen to use it at home, even when they share a common native language, and so their children learn the language as their native tongue.

Language neutrality requires that we've found the Holy Grail of Universal Grammar, which is not likely in the foreseeable future.
Languages are full of idioms such as 'bite the bullet' which do not obey the principal of compositionality, which is to say the meaning is not the result of constructing its parts.
As mentioned earlier, a true interlingua is language neutral, but falling short of that, pushing the language model more toward the direction of semantics can capture a number of generalites which may aid in the translation process.

The translation includes for each language a set of axioms that are included in the resulting FOL theories and that thereby constrain the possible interpretations of those theories.
Another significant advantage of an interlingua-based semantics is that the constraints imposed by the source representation language on the interpretation of logical theories represented in that language are expressed as axioms in the interlingua.
If automated reasoning tools are available for the interlingua, which they are for our case study in which the interlingua is first-order logic, one can then subject the BTL axioms to critique using those tools to discover inconsistencies, unintended consequences, missing or overly weak axioms, redundant axioms, or needlessly complex axioms.

As discussed above in the introduction, a significant advantage of an interlingua-based semantics for a language L is that the BT axioms can be subjected to critique using automated reasoning tools to discover inconsistencies, unintended consequences, missing or overly weak axioms, redundant axioms, or needlessly complex axioms.
For example, the RDF specification [Lassila and Swick 1999] describes an Extensible Markup Language [Bray et al 2000] encoding as the concrete syntax for RDF.
