Intermission (2004) Movie Review - The Hollywood News
Intermission, for my money, belongs right along side Passion of the Christ, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Touching the Void as one of the best films of 2004, and even though it's only April, it's shaping up to be one hell of a year.
As I stated, Intermission certainly has darker, mean spirited moments, but some of the reviews I've read for this movie have been fairly misleading, as many of them suggest that Intermission is full of characters without heart.
Intermission offers up plenty of twists and turns and it is violent at times, but at it's core, this is really a movie about love.

Intermission - Movie Review - Stylus Magazine
Intermission is a story about a struggling reality-TV producer, wronged women, downtrodden retail workers, lonely guys, kitchen furnishings, a deviant, rock-throwing kid, and… uh, no, that’s not quite it either.
Intermission is about a dozen stories going on at once that deal with roughly as many peoples’ lives and how they intertwine and sometimes explosively collide.
Intermission manages to distinguish itself by foregoing MTV editing, willfully incomprehensible colloquialisms and a breathtaking body count in deference to (of all things) love.

Joe Critic | "Intermission" Movie Review & More
Intermission, written by playwright/director Mark O'Rowe, and directed by first-time director John Crowley, is a large ensemble piece with 11 main characters, 54 overall characters, all connected through the aforementioned John (Cillian Murphy), his beloved Dierdre (Kelly Macdonald), an Irish pub and a common theme.
This technique gives Intermission a more humanistic touch, as if a naked eye is capturing the events as they happen, rather than a hunk of metal on crane.
Intermission may not be a classic in the making, nor is the style completely original, but it is great fun nonetheless.

Yet the wit and verve of "Intermission," from first-time director John Crowley and novice screenwriter Mark O'Rowe, far outshine the occasional character chaos and conversational cacophony.
Often bizarrely funny, the movie freshens up the hip European crime-romp genre pioneered by "Trainspotting" and "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" with a stronger female presence and a lovably dim gang of saps and sad sacks.
"Intermission" will either grab or repel you in the opening sequence, as Farrell's Lehiff seemingly embarks on the first tender moments of new romance with a store clerk he's just met before abruptly revealing his true colors.

MCN: 20 Weeks of Summer - Week Twelve
The seven $100 million-plus movies so far (projecting Click as one, though it's not there yet) ties the 2003 record for that stat but still is pretty much average for early summer, since we haven't seen the heights in the top titles.
While I expected to see an upswing in the worldwide numbers, as that market continues to grow, the reality is that at this point of this summer, overall business is off hundreds of millions among the top titles when compared to the last five years.

Intermission Movie Review - Intermission Movie Trailer - The Boston Globe
Actually, the intermission referred to is the break in the relationship between John (Cillian Murphy, last seen running from zombies in "28 Days Later") and Deirdre (Kelly Macdonald, the naive maid of "Gosford Park"), two aimless young Dubliners.
Farrell doesn't act like a movie star here, but he clearly is one, and the hairtrigger Lehiff manages to stay part of the ensemble while burning a hole through every scene he's in, even when he's wearing a rubber mask and holding one of the characters hostage.
"Intermission" sometimes goes too far in connecting its multi-narrative dots, and the jiggling, zoomy camerawork -- this year's model for movie "realism" -- shouldn't be taken in on a full stomach.

Intermission (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Intermission is a 2003 motion picture directed by John Crowley which tells a story of a young couple and people surrounding them.
Like many of the characters seen in the movie, Lehiff (Farrell) has a talent for trouble with the law, hence he sings the song, “I Fought the Law” (written by Sonny Curtis), at the end of the movie.
His character is therefore incomplete without doing something criminal, and, indeed, many, if not all, of the characters in the movie seem totally dysfunctional and as incomplete as he is, albeit in their differing ways.

Smoothly shifting between subplots while capturing disparate takes on life and love, Intermission is a gem with a sense of humor that jumps from vicious to sweet and back again.
With its independent film sensibilities, Intermission has a satiric edge that is comfortable poking fun at life in Ireland as well as taking jabs at the media and the contributions to Irish culture made by the United States.
Intermission is a low-budget independent film from Ireland, and that works to the movie’s advantage as it reverts back to good old-fashioned storytelling and a collection of memorable characters that make this Intermission a break well worth taking.

 Intermission - Movie Review
The (literally) hard-hitting 'Intermission' maps out the intersecting lives of a group of Dubliners who are between partners, and follows their thoroughly coarse, often violent and generally unhinged quest for some sort of stable relationship.
Stripping most of the romance away from the romantic comedy genre, the film depicts a world where love hurts, and where radical shifts in destiny are just a stone's throw away.
This unpredictability makes the whole daft chain of events compelling to watch, as does the extremely crude, absurd dialogue and the frequent bursts of violence - almost every character is at some point punched, shot, scratched, covered in blood, shat or pissed on.

 Intermission - Movie Review
What Intermission resembles just as handily, though, is an Irish Love Actually, which is to say it’s like Love Actually with a lot more drinking and violence.
It’s a useful means of tying these storylines together, I suppose, and provides some chuckles, but its lack of thematic connection to the rest of material, and its minor (yet heavy-handed) satire of television documentaries bear little post-movie scrutiny.
A lot of Intermission is like that: Entertaining as it goes along, leaving you wanting more of this (the offbeat, offhand humor), less of that (the male characters’ haplessness), satisfied but not elated.
