The intermountain states (also Intermountain West and the Great Basin) of the United States of America are generally considered to be Utah, Idaho, and Nevada.
The intermountain states are so named because they lie between (or at least amidst) the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades.
The intermountain states are included among those states considered as the Mountain States.

Among the Intermountain states, Nevada continued to be the fastest growing, at a 5 percent average annual pace of job growth in September and October.
State payroll employment is estimated to have increased at an average annual rate of 3 percent in September and October, which brings the average rate of employment growth in 1996 through October to 2-3/4 percent.

States are increasingly cramming their delegate selection events into the first part of the season, resulting in secured nominations by the end of March.
States realize that only a few of them really have influence on presidential candidates, and those are the states which have either an early, trend-setting primary, such as New Hampshire, or a significant number of delegate votes, such as California.
States were classified relevant if they conducted "a primary or caucus that receives considerable attention from candidates and the news media and has a major effect on who receives the party nomination for president." According to Loevy's study, only one intermountain west state was deemed relevant, Colorado.

Policy and regulatory status appear to vary widely throughout the Intermountain West, and while several states have strong regulations in place, the majority are struggling to push for more formal regulations than the loose compilation of policy guidelines under which they are currently operating.
Most Intermountain West states use this estimate, but it was pointed out that there are regional differences in water use habits that could affect the use of these numbers.
While most states shared these as priority issues, several others had unique concerns, such as the abundance of specific nutrients (mainly nitrates and phosphorus) in their ground water, licensing and certification issues, persuading legislatures to turn "guidelines" into rules, and the regulatory problems associated with sparsely populated locales.

The Intermountain West region is the fastest-growing region in the U.S. According to the 2000 Census, the five fastest growing states in the Nation, are in the Intermountain West and in ranked order are: (1) Nevada (+68.3%), (2) Arizona (+40%), (3) Colorado (+30.6%), (4) Utah (+29.6%), and (5) Idaho (+28.5%).
Note: Each Working Group member is responsible for interacting with stakeholders in their respective state, especially with the state emergency management organization, the state geological survey, and engineers.
