Central Europe Review - Debate: The Union of Death
The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO) was a populist organization established by intellectuals, as such groups often are, but staffed by peasants, the lumpen proletariat and dwellers of the slums formed by Macedonian refugees all over the Balkans and especially in Sofia.
While IMRO sought to liberate the parts of Macedonia which were under Greek and Serb control, the Black Hand (known in Serbian as Crna Ruka and officially called Union or Death) sought to do the same for Serbs under Ottoman or Habsburg rule.
IMRO, after having terrorized Bulgaria for decades and decimated its political elite, was reduced to rubble, bloodlessly, in a matter of a few weeks in 1934.

Macedonian Heritage - Vlassis Vlassidis: Review of PhD Dissertation
The emergence and activities of Bulgarian revolutionary committees in the beginning of the 20th century in Macedonia and especially of IMRO have become the objects of long and extensive research of history.
In particular, the dissertation examines the structure of IMRO in a central, regional and local level and its relationship with the Bulgarian political parties and the Macedonian refugee organizations.
Great weight was placed on the substantiation of the influence exerted by IMRO on the Slavophones within the Greek state, either by their participation in local councils or by their political instruction, or simply by the preservation of emotional ties.

Central Europe Review - Union of Death: IMRO
In this, The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO) collaborated with the pro-Bulgarian organization Vzhovits.
IMRO never gave up its proclaimed goal to liberate both occupied parts of Macedonia, the Aegean and Vardar ones, but as time passed and as the nature of its organization and operation evolved, the perfunctoriness of its proclamations became more and more evident.
Following the murder, the IMRO was given full control of the region of Petrić, which it used as a launching pad for hit and run attacks against Yugoslavia with the full, though clandestine, support of the Bulgarian Ministry of War and Fascist Italy.
