Bicycle brake systems - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the machines were fixed gear bicycles a rider could reduce speed by reversing the thrust on the pedals.
When such a hub is pedalled forwards, the sprocket drives a screw which forces a clutch to move along the axle, driving the hub shell or gear assembly.
In all of these designs, the braking force is applied by the rider squeezing a lever mounted on the handlebar; this causes friction pads (usually made of leather or rubber) to contact the rim of the rotating wheel, thus slowing it and the bicycle.

 Custom Equipment - Future Fantesy
The hub at right by Shimano and the similar models by Sturmey Archer provide 5 to 7 speeds (higher number of speeds may be available soon) have the advantage of lower maintenance, and some have indicated, less probability of freeze-up in the slushy weather.
The other advantage of the internally geared hub is the ability to install a totally enclosed chain line.
There is a slight drag penalty, even when the hub is not generating power, (about 2 watts, cyclists normally are capable of sustaining around 100 watts, with surge capacity to 150 watts), not something you will notice.

 Hub and Rim Measurement Information
For single speed or internally geared hub's, the flanges might or might not be off-center, so it would be best to measure them assuming that they are to make sure the HFO values are accurate.
For standard front hub's, the hub flanges are equal distances from the center of the hub, so the HFO value for one flange is the same as the HFO value of the other.
For standard front hub's all you need to do to calculate the HFO value is this; Measure the separation of the flanges at their mid point, like if the flanges were extremely thin.

Internal hub index shifters - Dirt Rag Forums
Isn't the indexing in the hub with the Shimano and SRAM internally geared hubs?
With the Rohloff, the indexing is all in the hub.
Oh, and I think the hub is not internally indexed, which is why I am worried about slapping a different shifter on it.

 Epicyclic Hub
With the hub gear ratio the effective diameter of the wheel was 36".
Outside gear sytems required odd and necessarily shaky locations for split crank assemblies in which two short cranks must be attached, one to each side, of the fork.
The gear ratio must be greater than one (the difficult one in this case) because the goal is speed.

Internal gear hubs are designed to require fewer gears to cover a wide range of gearing.
For instance, each gear change on our bike is like changing 2-3 gears on a chain bike - so you can transition quickly from hill climbing to cruising with a quick twist of the wrist.
Hub gears are totaly enclosed and operate in a protected enveironmnt.

League of American Bicyclists * News
An internally-geared hub is best for acceleration, because it shifts when the bicycle is stopped or moving very slowly, and you can easily tell what gear the hub is in.
Hubs with 5 or fewer speeds should be set up so the starting gear is their lowest gear.
If the starting gear is on the largest, inner sprocket at the rear wheel, you find the starting gear simply by shifting the rear derailleur to the end of its travel – entirely by feel.

In the evolution of ride-over-anything mountain bikes, the ever-vulnerable rear derailleur—that gangly parallelogram that shifts the chain up and down the rear cogs when it’s not clogged with mud or bent by rocks—has been a glaring technical handicap.
By using an internally geared rear hub and moving it to the center of the bike, GT created a more stable center of gravity and a stronger rear wheel.
The hub’s internal gearing determines the speed of this chain.

 Geared 36 - Unicyclist Community
The other advantage with the jackshaft gearing is that you can gear it higher than you can with an internally geared hub.
The trick is that the hub body is on bearings and is able to rotate faster than the spindle.
I think that because your inputs are magnified at the wheel due to the gearing, that you have a smaller "sweet spot" of controllability.

On an internally geared hub, the cog gear isn't attached to the hub.
When the gear ratio is something other than 1:1 (most of the time; on the Rohloff, 1:1 only happens in 11th gear), there is also a corresponding difference in input and output torques.
Since the input and output parts are both rotating and at different rates (the cog gear and the hub), this difference in torques has to show up somewhere else.

The advantage of having the hub gears is that you can shift to any gear, whether stopped or not, and whether pedaling or not.
The drawbacks to the internal gears are that they are less efficient in power transfer than a derailleur system (86-92% efficient as compared to the derailleur's 95-97%), and their internal workings are mostly inaccessible to the home mechanic.

Sure, the hub was on a bike, but that's not what I'm going to talk about, i'm going to talk about the quirky little thing called a Rohloff Speedhub.
The Speedhub is an internally geared hub giving you 14 speeds covering much the same span as your typical mountain drivetrain.
If you shift to an easier gear under tension, one of the benefits of the system, you do need to exert a lot of pressure on the twist grip shifter, and if I had weak hands I might have a hard time doing that.

While I find my dual drive hub unnecessary for my daily recreation/training rides here on the Snake River plains, as soon as I venture east or west into the mountains with camping gear I find I'm shifting through the whole range and happy that I can enjoy a climb without going into oxygen debt.
If you are considering an internally geared hub like a dual drive, I can't imagine what a 9 speed cassette will buy, while it might eliminate a lot of otherwise good selections.
I'm aware of all the chatter about weight and inefficiencies of the internal gear hubs, but for heavy touring in mountains I think the wide range offered is a good tradeoff.

A.The quick answer would be no. The delicate insides of the hub and the fact that shifting under load is not recommended would preclude the internal hubs from being good off-road components.
Additionally, horizontal dropouts are required for most of the internally geared hubs that we offer.
The internal hubs that SRAM offers are best suited, and excel at, city/easy biking applications.

Rohloff Speed Hub: Worth the cash? - Dirt Rag Forums
Plus side of Rohloff is a goof proof drivetrain that's well up out of the mud and muck with the 32:13 gears, a wide gear range, lots of BB clearance, and all your shifting is on a 14 position gripshift.
The kicker with the Rohloff is that the indexing is all in the hub, so the gripshifty bit has two cables that rotate and counter-rotate a 1" bobbin at the hub to click the 8mm hex nubbin that actually does the shifting.
The best part is still that you can pick any gear while stopped, so you can find the right gear to get moving again when something unpleasant or unexpected happens at speed.

Basically when I locked the brakes and mashed the pedals(without even being on the bike) the chain would skip, but I thought it was the rear hub, and it wasn't, it was skipping on the FRONT middle(which is the outer on my bike) ring.
Was kind of cool getting into the hub, once I saw how the bearings worked on each side, and where all the spacers and cones go, it was pretty easy putting them back together.
