The International Appalachian Trail (IAT; French: Sentier International des Appalaches, SIA) is a hiking trail which runs from the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail at Mount Katahdin, Maine to the northernmost tip of the Appalachian Mountains at Belle Isle, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The IAT was proposed in 1994 to traverse the portions of the Appalachian Mountains which run through Maine, New Brunswick, and Quebec that the Appalachian Trail did not cover.
The official opening of the first trail section of the IAT Newfoundland Labrador was September 23, 2006.

The idea of extending the Appalachian Trail was dismissed by some as a political gimmick when it was proposed in 1994 by former two-term Maine Gov. Joseph Brennan during his unsuccessful campaign for another term.
The trail includes 100 miles in Maine before riding the international border for 11 miles and opening up to 170 miles in New Brunswick, 417 miles in Quebec, and nearly 600 miles in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Some segments of the trail follow country roads, but efforts continue to improve routes by putting the trail along abandoned railroad lines and over Daicey Pond in Baxter State Park, where Katahdin is located.

The trail has grown quickly since it was proposed in the spring of 1994 by former Maine Gov. Joseph Brennan.
The idea at that time was to connect the highest points of the Appalachian Mountains in Maine, New Brunswick and Quebec, according to Dick Anderson, president of the board's Maine IAT chapter and a lawyer from Portland.
Completion of the international trail had been expected by 2000, Anderson said, but he now believes that goal was too ambitious.

Trail: The trail wends its way for almost 1,100 km from the terminus of the Appalachian Trail at Mt Katahdin in Maine to the tip of the Gaspé.
The trail opened in 2000 for through-hiking even though there remained some sections of the trail left to build (roads can be used to detour around unfinished sections).
Caution: Much of the trail in Quebec goes through remote wilderness areas and is therefore recommended only for experienced hikers with good naviagtion and survival skills.

When I saw the International Appalachian Trail in the spring of 1998, several sections were still incomplete.
I however saw enough to know it would not just beckon to thru-hikers determined to bag the international extension to the Appalachian Trail, but would be a destination trail in its own right for pleasure hikers looking for uncrowded hiking through some of the most spectacular and unspoiled country on the continent.
Halfway along, the trail circumnavigates the massive elliptical plateau of Mont Albert which is home to the only herd of caribou south of the Arctic Circle, and is hard to leave in a hurry, unless of course it's rutting season (for the caribou that is).

Trail hikers who are attempting to complete the entire trail in a single season are termed thru-hikers; those who traverse the trail during a series of separate trips are known as "section-hikers." The trail's rugged terrain and cold weather conditions during the spring and fall make thru-hiking an extremely demanding experience.
In 1998, Bill Bryson described his attempts at walking the trail in his book "A Walk in the Woods." It is a less-than-serious view of the trail, from a less-than-fit person's perspective.

Joel Swanton, a forester with Champion International, another company whose land the IAT/SIA hopes to cross, said the Saddleback situation is among “some of the things we’re looking at” in determining whether to allow passage of the trail.
Despite landowner hesitation, Anderson persists in his dream, which was propelled into the international spotlight when Anderson prompted his former boss, Joe Brennan, to tout the trail in his unsuccessful 1996 campaign to reclaim the governorship.

The AT is maintained by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) through the cooperative effort of the ATC, its maintaining clubs, and a myriad of local, regional, and federal agencies.
Interest in the entire Appalachian Range, as we know it to exist on the North American continent, and especially the interest to hike there, is now taking root in Newfoundland, through formation of the newest group of trail builders, the Newfoundland Chapter, SIA/IAT.

But, when we heard about it at Trail Days in Damascus, VA, we couldn’t resist seeing caribou, whales, and being surrounded by a completely different language.
We had to flip-flop from Bear Mountain, NY up to Cap Gaspe, QC because part of the trail in Quebec closes in September.
This hike, over 2,800 miles just happened to be in one of the wettest years on record, but it was still awesome.
