A conference in 1991 on "University Action for Sustainable Development" was held at Dalhousie University Halifax, Canada, from 9-11 December 1991, in cooperation with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) (external link) and the United Nations University (UNU) (external link).
IAU was invited to be involved in the follow-up of the Rio Conference.
As an international representative of the universities of the world, one of the IAU’s primary functions is to identify and research issues that are of concern and interest to university institutions.

As stated in its Founding Charter, IAU's mission is based on the fundamental principles for which every university should stand, namely the right to pursue knowledge for its own sake, to follow wherever the search for truth may lead, the tolerance of divergent opinion and freedom from political interference.
The Association aims to give expression to the obligation of universities as social institutions to promote, through teaching and research, the principles of freedom and justice, of human dignity and solidarity, and contributes, through international cooperation, to the development of material and moral assistance for the strengthening of higher education generally.
Second, the Association speaks on behalf of universities, and of higher education in general, and represents their concerns and interests in public debate and to outside partners.

The Board action took place late last month at the IAU’s 12th General Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where Englert was in attendance with university leaders from 90 countries.
The IAU Board is made up of 20 outstanding leaders in higher education from all parts of the globe.
IAU President and United Nations University Rector Hans Van Ginkel said he is delighted that Englert is now a board member.

The first chapter, beginning with ‘the idea of a distance teaching university,’ attempts to examine the extent to which the early 1970s born distance teaching universities have departed from the first-generation correspondence institutions of higher education system.
This chapter broadly deals with the extent to which these distance teaching universities present a challenge to the well-established traditional/campus-centered universities; with various socio-political factors led to the establishment of these distance teaching universities; and with various socio-academic goals these distance teaching universities are expected to fulfil.
Guri-Rosenblit, on the basis of her experience of over two decades of association with distance teaching system, some guidelines to be considered for initiating and establishing new distance teaching universities in the future that are based on the past experiences of veteran distance teaching universities.
