 International Boundary Survey
Between 1909 and 1912, the International Boundary Commission surveyed, marked and cleared the international boundary (141st meridian) between the Yukon River and the Porcupine River (1909-1910), and between the Porcupine River and the arctic coast (1911-1912).
Boundary monuments, campsites, and triangulation sites established within what is now Vuntut National Park are a lasting legacy of this survey (see map Figure 2.4, showing caches, triangulation sites and trail routes).
The International Boundary Survey party itself was seen by some as the source of the smallpox epidemic and many people stayed away after 1911 (International Boundary Commission 1918).

The Treaty of December 30, 1853 reestablished the southern boundary of New Mexico and Arizona to enable the United States to construct a railroad to the west coast along a southern route and to resolve a question arising from the 1848 Treaty as to the location of the southern boundary of New Mexico.
Temporary commissions were formed by these boundary treaties to perform the first joint mission of the Government of the United States and Mexico, which was to survey and demarcate the boundary on the ground in accordance with the treaties.
As the settlements grew along the boundary rivers and the adjoining lands began to be developed for agriculture in the late Nineteenth Century, questions arose as to the location of the boundary when the rivers changed their course and transferred tracts of land from one side of the river to the other.

The International Boundary and Water Commission (Spanish: Comisión Internacional de Límites y Aguas) is an international body created in 1889 by the United States and Mexico to administer the many boundary and water-rights treaties and agreements between the two nations.
As settlements sprang up along the boundary rivers and the adjoining lands began to be developed for agriculture in the late 19th century, questions arose as to the location of the boundary when the rivers changed their course and transferred tracts of land from one side of the river to the other.
This Treaty entrusts the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) (the renamed International Boundary Commission of the 1889 Convention) with the application of its terms, the regulation and exercise of the rights and obligations which the two governments assumed therunder, and the settlement of all disputes to which its observance and execution may give rise.

Costs recoverable (2) The costs of and incidental to any removal, destruction or disposition of a work or addition pursuant to subsection (1), after deducting therefrom any sum that may be realized by the sale or other disposition, are recoverable with costs by Her Majesty from the owner as a debt due to Her Majesty.

Any erection of billboards or other structures within ten feet of the international boundary, or any reconstruction of a line building or other structure which has suffered destruction, or any making of additions to any structure erected on the international boundary, or any interference with boundary monuments, constitutes an infraction under the said Act.

An 1844 boundary dispute during U.S. President James K. Polk's administration led to a call for the northern boundary of the U.S. to be 54°40′north (related to the southern boundary of Russia's Alaska Territory), but the United Kingdom wanted a border that followed the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean.
In 1925 the International Boundary Commission was made a permanent organization responsible for surveying and mapping the boundary, maintaining boundary monuments (and buoys where applicable), as well as keeping the boundary clear of brush and vegetation for 6 metres (20 ft) on each side of the line.
Parts of the International Boundary cross through mountainous terrain or heavily forested areas, but significant portions also cross remote prairie farmland and the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence River, in addition to the maritime components of the boundary at the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic oceans.

The International Boundary Commission is a bilateral treaty organization that is jointly funded by Canada and the U.S. It was created by a 1908 treaty to mark, map and maintain the land and water boundary between Canada and the U.S., and to regulate any construction within three metres of the international boundary.
The Commission was established as the permanent caretaker of the boundary area through the Treaty of Washington in 1925.
