Modern canoeing is no less sophisticated, but then neither are any of the fundamentals of speed, endurance or efficiency any less important to the Malta Canoe Federation.
A few years before the canoe federation was conceived (1991) the secretary of the International Canoe Federation (ICF) visited Malta and saw the September traditional regatta.
It's perhaps somewhat ironic that 15 years on, it's canoeing and not rowing that's going international and with the continued assistance of the MOC and the ICF, local athletes are doing just that.

The C1 canoe may be entirely open and shall not be covered more than 150 cm from the stem and 75 cm from the stern, reckoned from the outer edge of the stem or stern to the furthest point of the edge of the deck for the fore or aft decks respectively.
Should a competitor have completed a race in a kayak or canoe which is shown upon inspection not to conform with the ICF classifications he shall be disqualified from the race in question.
