International Color Consortium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ICC specification, currently on version 4, allows for fidelity of color when moved between applications and operating systems, from the point of creation to the final print.
The main emphasis of the ICC is to define a format for ICC Profiles, which describe the color attributes of a particular device or viewing requirement by defining a mapping between the source or target color space and a profile connection space (PCS).
ICC define the format precisely but do not define algorithms or processing details.

Color Management: Current Practice and The Adoption of a New Standard
Color management is done by adjusting the response of all devices to match the response of the film printer (17).
Then color adjustment is performed at output time to move the data into the device color space of the output device, which might be film recorder or a video device.
The success of color management is limited for several reasons, but three factors seem to be most important: the average time needed to evaluate colorimetric differences in images; the statistical deviation an output device undergoes when working under usual conditions; and the absence of calibration equipment in the desktop environment.

Colors viewed on a monitor can look different than the same colors output from an inkjet printer or printing press, which both use CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, fl) for color reproduction.
It is a color model based on L* = lightness, a* = red-green axis of the space, b* = blue-yellow axis of the space.
Using color management with a printer or press is very challenging because the different substrates used affect the outcome of the color.
