Cod Stocks at Risk of Collapse / International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. (Denmark) Press Release 28oct02
Scientists from ICES have advised the European Commission and national governments that all fisheries that target cod in the North Sea, Skagerrak, Irish Sea and waters west of Scotland should be closed (Go to chart of ICES areas).
Cod stocks in the North Sea, Skagerrak, Irish Sea and waters west of Scotland have been in decline for a number of years, and are now at, or near, their lowest recorded levels.
The European Commission has recently proposed a rebuilding plan for the North Sea cod stock whereby fishing pressure would be reduced to increase the spawning stock biomass (fish able to reproduce) by 30% per year.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — An international marine research group warned Monday that the outlook for cod stocks in the North Sea was poor and called for a reduction in fishing off Norway, in inner Danish waters and around the Faeroe Islands.
The Copenhagen-based International Council for the Exploration of the Sea said it would call for at least a 50 percent reduction in cod fishing off the Faeroe Islands, located between Scotland and Iceland.
In recent years, scientists say North Sea cod stocks have shrunk to about 10 percent of 1970 levels, and warned of depletion on the scale that seen in eastern Canadian waters, where cod largely disappeared in the 1990s.

BBC NEWS | Northern Ireland | Quarter of Irish sea cod 'illegal'
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) claimed that unrecorded catches by fishermen were undermining the European quota system.
The marine scientists said their most plausible forecast for Irish Sea cod catches assumed a catch in 2005 that was 25% greater than the total allowable tonnage.
In the case of cod, the Irish Sea fleet faces a 15% reduction while the prawn quota has been reduced by more than 10%, not because the stock is under pressure, but simply that cod is often a by-catch as trawlers scour the muddy bottom of the Irish Sea.

For example, she shows how public opinion and other forces stimulated council leaders of the 1970s to address marine pollution, a move that facilitated the incorporation of interdisciplinary environmental sciences into ICES.

Brussels, Belgium – As EU Fisheries Ministers prepare to meet in Brussels on 20 December for the annual decision on fish quotas, WWF is calling for the total closure of deep sea fisheries in Europe’s waters.

In October, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) advised zero-catch for deep water sharks in 2006, but the European Commission has not proposed any measure to start the recovery of these stocks.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is the oldest intergovernmental organisation in the world concerned with marine and fisheries science.
A major part of ICES' work is undertaken at the direct request of international regulatory commissions and national administrations for scientific information and advice on the conservation and management of fish and shellfish stocks, or the effects of pollution on the marine environment.
The development and coordination of cooperative international research and appraisal of exploited marine fish and shellfish stocks have been important parts of the overall programme of ICES activities since the organisation's inception in 1902.

But in the autumn of 2001, five were found stranded ashore or floating dead at sea, along Spain’s northern coast on the Bay of Biscay.

Guerra, in his address to the Annual Science Conference of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, which is being held in Vigo, Spain, said he wants a discussion in the region first about how, and if, seismic surveys at sea should be done, in light of this new evidence.
