ICOMOS is an international, non-governmental organization dedicated to the conservation of the world's historic monuments and sites.
The organization was founded in 1965, as a result of the international adoption of the Charter for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites in Venice the year before.
Through its 21 International Scientific Committees of experts from around the world, and through its triennial General Assembly, ICOMOS seeks to establish international standards for the preservation, restoration, and management of the cultural environment.

 ICOMOS Recommendation, Durham Cathedral and Castle
Located on a rocky butte overlooking a bend in the Wear River, the monumental array constituted by the cathedral and its outbuildings to the south and by the castle which inhibits the main access to the peninsula, to the north, makes up one of the best known cityscapes of medieval Europe.
The relatively small size of Durham, which is an episcopal and university town (25,600 inhabitants in 1985) is conducive to the sound conservation of this site which is partly wooded.
The history of Durham is linked to that of the transfer of the body of St. Cuthbert (died in 687), the evangelist of Northumbria who was buried on the island of Lindisfarne (Holy Land).

 Orkney News Archive: International heritage organisation choose Orkney for AGM
An international organisation dedicated to world historical monuments are to hold their AGM in Orkney later this month.
Among the 60 or so delegates from the British branch of the International Council on Monuments and Sites will be the group’s patron, the Duke of Gloucester, who will be in the county to officially open the refurbished St Peter’s Kirk in Sandwick.
Prior to the arrival of the main group, a representative from the International Council on Monuments and Sites will be in Orkney on May 27 for a talk on the organisation’s work worldwide.

Preservation of cultural sites has traditionally been oriented toward the protection and restoration of built structures, but there is now a trend toward the protection of larger sites and a monument's surrounds.
Site maintenance may include scheduled cleaning or repair of signs and tourist facilities, the repair of fences, the application of stone preservation products, anti-graffiti treatments, etc. GIS is a logical tool to apply to site maintenance, particularly the maintenance of large sites.
For the purpose of this Convention, international protection of the world cultural and natural heritage shall be understood to mean the establishment of a system of international cooperation and assistance designed to support States Parties to the Convention in their efforts to conserve and identify that heritage.

 Blue Shield Seminar on the Protection of Cultural Heritage in Emergencies and Exceptional Situations
The seminar organised jointly by ICBS, IIAS (International Institute of Archival Sciences in Maribor, Slovenia) and the Regional Archives of Maribor, with the support of UNESCO, gathered thirty-one participants from ten countries (Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Hungary, The Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia and Sweden) and took place in Radenci, Slovenia, November 12-16, 1998.
All through the seminar the necessity of taking preventive measures and of having a written disaster plan was underlined, together with the need of a strong cooperation between the different actors of the response and recovery team (including the Army and the Civil Defence).
On the initiative of the International Committee of the Blue Shield (ICBS) with the participation and support of UNESCO, a seminar was held in Radenci, Slovenia, 12-16 November 1998.

From 12-14 May 2004 the City of Vienna hosted the international conference "World Heritage and Contemporary Architecture", organised together with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and co-organized by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.
This number rises to more than 300 sites inscribed, if the monuments located in an urban context and towns included in cultural landscapes are also considered.

ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) and ICOM (International Council of Museums) learned with great shock of the new decree issued by the Taliban leadership of Mullah Mohammad Omar ordering the systematic destruction of all statues in the country.
This decision breaks the commitment made by the Taliban leadership in 1999 to protect all cultural heritage in Afghanistan and in particular the giant Buddha figures at Bamiyan.
ICOMOS, in its 2000 World Report on monuments and sites in danger, pointed out in detail the dangers to cultural heritage in Afghanistan, in particular the pre-Islamic figures of the Buddha in Bamiyan.
