Eisteddfod - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tradition of such a meeting of Welsh artists dates back to at least the 12th century when a festival of poetry and music was held by Rhys ap Gruffydd of Deheubarth at his court in Cardigan in 1176, but with the decline of the bardic tradition it fell into abeyance.
The most important eisteddfod is the National Eisteddfod of Wales, held annually in the first week of August and usually alternating between North and South Wales, and taking place entirely in the Welsh language.
Their Eisteddfod began with Welsh pioneers to the Malad Valley in the late 1800's, but stopped with the outbreak of World War I. In 2004 they reinstated this celebration calling it the Malad Valley Welsh Festival.

 GWYBODIADUR: The Eisteddfod
Eisteddfod is one of the few Welsh words to have entered the English language – though English dictionaries disagree on exactly what it means – and it has been used all over the world to refer to a competitive cultural festival or celebration of the performing arts.
The first recorded eisteddfod is thought to have taken place in Cardigan in 1176, though the word itself is not recorded until 1523, when the event became properly regulated as a sort of competitive test of professional aptitude for bards.
The Eisteddfod is also a big event, culturally and financially, for the host area: it spills over into the surrounding towns in the form of evening events such as concerts and plays.

The first International Musical Eisteddfod was held in 1947, with the aim of promoting peace between nations after the war-torn years on 1939-45, through the international language of music.
The Eisteddfod (which literally means a sitting or gathering) evolved from bardic tournaments which, tradition tells us, began in the reign of Hywel Ddu in the 10th century.
In 1568, an Eisteddfod was held in Caerwys, at which the following prizes were awarded: a minature silver chair to the successful poet, a little silver 'crwth' to the winning fiddler, a silver toungue to the best singer, and a tiny silver harp to the champion harpist.

The International Music Eisteddfod comes billed as "the world's greatest folk festival" but unlike the National Eisteddfod, which is a purely Welsh affair, the Llangollen event draws amateur performers from thirty countries, all competing for prizes in their chosen disciplines.
Throughout the week, performers present their works at numerous sites around the town, but mainly in the much-derided 6000-seat white plastic structure designed to evoke the shape of the traditional marquee which was formerly erected on the site each year.
The Eisteddfod has been held in its present form since 1947, when it was started more or less on a whim by one Harold Tudor.

icWales - Music festival builds relations with the world
THE first Llangollen International Eisteddfod in 1947 was born out of a love of poetry, some high-minded intentions and maybe, as local folklore suggests, from a milk boy overheard singing at the top of a mountain.
According to Professor Chris Adams, the Llangollen International Eisteddfod's archivist, the first stirrings of an idea came to Wrexham journalist and British Council officer Harold Tudor in 1943 when he brought representatives of the governments-in-exile to the National Eisteddfod in Bangor.
This spurred Tudor to organise a full international concert at the Llandybie National Eisteddfod in 1944 and by late 1945 he had formulated his idea of an international choral festival being held as an adjunct to the 1947 National Eisteddfod.
