International Electrotechnical Commission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Today, the IEC tends to be the prime reference point for many standards which were originally drawn up by national standards bodies such as the BSI, with those bodies now copying the IEC version into their current publications.
For example, IEC 268-10 (1978) is commonly quoted as the standard defining 'Programme Level Meters', though the content is essentially the same as was defined in British Standard BS4297-1968, which in turn came out of work done at the BBC Research Department.
The IEC was instrumental in developing and distributing standards for units of measurement, particularly the gauss, hertz, and weber.

National bodies that are members of ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity.
For a named type whose first subtype is T, this International Standard sometimes refers to the type of T as simply ``the type T.'' 8 A named type that is declared by a full_type_declaration, or an anonymous type that is defined as part of declaring an object of the type, is called a full type.
The remainder of this International Standard relies on this equivalence; explanations are given for declarations with a single defining_identifier.
