English is descended from the language spoken by the Germanic tribes, the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes.
The dialects spoken by these invaders formed what would be called Old English, which was also strongly influenced by yet another Germanic dialect, Old Norse, spoken by Viking invaders who settled mainly in the North-East (see Jorvik).
Modern English, the language described by this article, began its rise around the time of William Shakespeare and its grammar has been essentially the same since that time, with the most important changes being in the large increase of vocabulary.

Responsibility for the version was delegated to a self-governing body of fifteen Biblical scholars, the Committee on Bible Translation, and in 1967, the New York Bible Society (now International Bible Society) generously undertook the financial sponsorship of the project.
