IMO regularly enacts regulations (such as the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea) which are enforced by class societies and recognized organizations who survey ships regularly to ensure compliance with specific laws applicable to each individual ship.
Prior to 11 September 2001, IMO had begun work on the International Ship and Port Security Code, which was designed to provide guidance for shipowners and port facilities in establishing strict security procedures to prevent weapons of mass destruction and other contraband from being transported by ship.
The IMO is also responsible for publishing the International Code of Signals for use between merchant and naval vessels.

The International Maritime Bureau is a specialised bureau of the International Chamber of Commerce.
The IMB's responsibilities lie in fighting crimes related to maritime trade and transportation, particularly piracy and commercial fraud, and in protecting the crews of ocean-going vessels.
The bureau was founded in 1981, is endorsed by the UN 's International Maritime Organisation, and has observer status with Interpol.

That is why, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) – the United Nations specialised agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships – places considerations of the human element at the centre of its work.
That is why IMO’s revised Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), which is designed to make sure that the human resource available to the shipping industry meets the required standards, is one of the most important measures to be considered by IMO in recent years.
IMO was also concerned to ensure the correct balance between tightening security provisions so that criminals and terrorists cannot gain access to ships and ports by posing as seafarers, while ensuring that innocent seafarers are not themselves unfairly penalised as a result – for example, by denying them shore leave.

A previous decision in June by the Chair of the IMO to evict Greenpeace had been described as "final" until press attention questioning the move caused a strategic retreat, and the decision was forwarded to the current Assembly meeting.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has commissioned a study of the likely impact of European proposals to speed up the phase-out of single hulled oil tankers, made in the wake of the Erica accident off the French coast (see related story).
According to the IMO, concern has been expressed about the impact that the amendment might have on the world’s tanker fleet, and on its ability to ensure that global oil demands can be met.
The new IMO study will assess the impact of the proposals year-by-year, taking into account the volume of oil and oil products carried around the world, and the number of single-hulled tankers which would be affected by the proposals.

The seminar was organised in Turkey as a follow-up of actions of Greenpeace last year in Turkey, where Greenpeace requested the ILO and the Turkish trade union to improve labour conditions at the breaking yards in Turkey.
These are the main conclusions representatives from Asia, the shipping industry and experts on liability agreed upon at an international seminar on liability for the scrapping of ships, organised by the International Institute for Asian Studies and Greenpeace at the Netherlands Maritime Museum on 2nd of June 2003.
