IMO team selection in Germany is based on the main national mathematical competitions: The Bundeswettbewerb Mathematik (BWM, the former west German olympiad), the Deutsche Mathematik-Olympiade (DeMO, the former east German olympiad), and Jugend forscht (a research competition).
The 1st IMO was held in Braşov and Bucharest, Romania on 23-31 July, 1959.
The 17th IMO was held in Burgas and Sofia, Bulgaria in 1975.

Though during the first few years the IMO was confined to the countries like Poland, Russia and Bulgaria, other western countries also started to participate during sixties.

April 2, 2001--Wolfram Research is a title sponsor of the 42nd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), an event that promotes the importance of mathematics education and celebrates the accomplishments of the world's best and brightest students.
The Olympiad, which brings together over 450 of the most talented high-school-age mathematicians from more than 80 countries, will be held this summer in Washington, D.C., with opening ceremonies on July 4, 2001.

The first International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) was held in 1959 in Romania, and for some years was predominantly an event for countries of the Soviet Bloc.
At the IMO in Korea in July 2000, I was elected to the position of Secretary of the IMO Advisory Board, and have set myself the goal of increasing African participation in the IMO.
A number of mathematics teachers and university mathematicians in South Africa are already committed to using mathematical competitions and Olympiads to promote interest in mathematics and to identify and develop the natural ability of mathematically promising pupils.

The Colorado Mathematical Olympiad (CMO) is the largest essay-type mathematical competition in the United States, with 600 to 1,000 participants competing annually for fine prizes.

 Canada wins one gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the 46th Mathematical Olympiad in Mérida, Mexico.
The six members of the Canadian IMO team were selected from among more than 200,000 students who participated in local, provincial and national mathematics contests.
Prior to leaving for the 46th IMO, the team trained at the University of Calgary and at the Banff International Research Station (BIRS) from June 25th to July 10th, 2005.

Light relief was provided by a relay competition in which a team of former UK IMO team members won narrowly, despite a spritely performance from the Wrinklies (a distinguished subset of the instructors), and some excellent work from the five student teams.
The 34th IMO was an unforgettable experience for all those lucky enough to be there.
