The Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names (CNMMN): CNMMN of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) was established for the purpose of controlling the introduction of new minerals and mineral names, and of rationalising mineral nomenclature.
The principal objective of the association is to foster cooperation in, and advancement of, geochemistry and cosmochemistry in their broadest sense.
IMA supports the activities of commissions and working groups involved on certain aspects of mineralogical practice and facilitates intercourse among mineralogists by sponsoring and organising meetings.

The Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names of the International Mineralogical Association was established in 1959 for the purpose of controlling the introduction of new minerals and mineral names, and of rationalizing mineral nomenclature.
It must be understood that the CNMMN does not wish to impose an arbitrary set of rigid rules on the mineralogical community, but rather to provide a set of coherent guidelines that provide a reasonably consistent approach to the introduction of new minerals and the application of mineral nomenclature.

Earlier this month, Benimoff received word from the International Mineralogical Association a new mineral he and a team of international scientists unearthed in an upstate New York talc mine had been approved for classification.
The International Mineralogical Association was formed in 1959 to bring order to the chaotic and confused field of mineralogy, which until then had no strict rules regulating how new mineral species were defined.
Since 1959, the IMA has identified nearly 4,000 species of minerals, including 65 species approved in 2003 along with parvo-mangano-edenite.

The year's activities were highlighted by participation in the Fourth International Conference on Geomorphology in Bologna, Italy, a pre-conference field trip in the Alps on permafrost and slope stability, and participation in several conferences in Russia on permafrost (Pushchino) and cryopedology (Syktyvkar).

 INRA - Fougerite
Depending on the mineralogical form in which it is expressed, iron determines the colour of soils.
The researchers were thus able to characterise this new mineral species and in February 2004, obtain its accreditation from the International Mineralogical Association under the name of fougerite, from the name of the Fougères Forest in the Ille-et-Vilaine region of France.
In the soil, fougerite is the principal crystalline intermediate between ferrous iron (which is water-soluble) and ferric oxides, which are insoluble.

The Mineralogical Record - Mineral Abstracts
One of the amazing things I discovered while preparing abstracts for The Mineralogical Record is the tendency of some authors to omit certain data from their published descriptions, even though they had presented these data in their proposals to the CNMMN.
Fortunately I had retained copies of all of the proposals voted upon during my tenure as Chairman, so it was easy to compare the data given in a published description with the data given in the proposal.
This includes the original IMA number assigned when the proposal was submitted and any other comments pertinent to the mineral, such as deviations of data given here from those given in the reference.

The International Mineralogical Association is honoring Klaus Keil, of the University of Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, for his role in discovering a new mineral in 1967.
However, in preparing the description of niningerite for the International Encyclopedia of Minerals, Masaaki Shimizu, of Toyama University, and Joseph Mandarino, of the Royal Ontario Museum, found the published data actually covered two species of minerals: niningerite, which has more magnesium than iron, and an unnamed iron-dominant analogue of niningerite.
The grains were so small that most of the physical properties of the keilite material could not be determined when he and his associates described niningerite, Keil said.
