  Global UNESCO Network of Geoparks - European Geoparks Network
In October 2004 during the 5th European Geoparks Meeting held in Petralia Sottana, Madonie Geopark, a new agreement between the Division of Earth Sciences of UNESCO and the European Geoparks Network was officially signed.
The European Geopark Network with its integration in the Global Geoparks Network of UNESCO is recognized henceforth by the international community as an organization of great contribution on natural heritage and sustainable development issues.
Along with the Conference on Geoparks, a great exhibition was organized in which participated with kiosks the 8 Chinese Geoparks and a number of the members of the European Geoparks Network, the 44 National Geological Parks of China as well as more geological parks from various countries.

 First global geopark event closes as success
The First International Conference on Geoparks in Beijing has proved to be a renaissance for geology, contributing to geological protection and sustainable development, an official with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said yesterday.
The UNESCO philosophy and strategy concerning Geoparks should be adopted, acknowledging the focus on improving scientific understanding, resource conservation, local economic development, respect of cultural heritage, popularization of Earth sciences and education and enhanced tourism.
International co-operation in the field of geological heritage conservation and Geoparks should be enhanced.

 Portuguese Natural Area Added to Global Network of Geoparks
The Geopark Naturtejo da Meseta Meridional in central Portugal was recently unanimously accepted into the Global Network of Geoparks by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the first such park in Portugal.
Geoparks promote the development of a global network of sites which represent exceptional examples of our planet’s geological heritage, according to UNESCO.
The “European Geopark” designation was created in June 2003 and parks in the network carry this designation.

 Six Chinese Parks Selected as International Geoparks
Three of Spain's geoparks, one of Norway's, one Portugal's and one Brazil's, were also selected as International Geoparks at the conference held in Belfast.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Walter Erdelen, assistant director-general for Natural Sciences in UNESCO said that he is glad to note that the number of geoparks and their geographical coverage have almost doubled since the First International Geoparks Conference held in Beijing in 2004.
Geoparks are developing into top quality products related to tourism, which will sustain both the local environment and the communities who living there.

 The European Geoparks Network
The European Geoparks Network was established in June 2000, by four territories from different European Countries (France, Germany, Spain and Greece), working together during the last years with main objective the cooperation in protection of the geological heritage and the promotion of sustainable development of their territories in Europe.
The European Geoparks Network Coordination Unit has formed an Expert Committee made up of specialists in sustainable development and the enhancement of the geological heritage from the zones having initiated this programme and representatives of international structures working in the area of enhancement of the geological heritage.
Any territory wishing to develop a “European Geopark” or to be given advise to assist or validate its orientations in the area of Geotourism or enhancement of its geological heritage, may ask the Coordination Unit to provide an expert mission.

The 15,000-hectare Geopark has a large variety of fossilized plant species and a large accumulation of standing and lying petrified tree trunks — revealing past volcanic activity 20 million years ago that covered the forest in pyroclastic material.

They will describe the current state of Geoparks in the world and present a series of case studies focusing on specific issues: methods and techniques for safeguarding geological heritage; the scientific importance of Geoparks; the relationship between safeguarding Geoparks and their rational use; and the parks’ role in sustainable development of regional economies.
The “Global Network of Geoparks assisted by UNESCO”; was established during an international meeting last February 13 at UNESCO.

 Shishan geopark forges golden sightseeing route
Leiqiong Volcano Geopark, with Haikou Shishan Volcanic Cluster Geopark as an essential part, gained entry into the Global Geoparks Network at the second United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) International Geoparks Conference in Belfast, Northern Ireland recently.
Having been awarded with the world geopark laurel, Haikou geopark is now striving to promote itself as a national 4A scenic area.
In the future, Haikou geopark will attract institutions of higher learning and research institutes, both from home and abroad, to do their research and to study there.

The concept of the Geopark is in reality a redevelopment and rebadging of protected and natural areas to emphasise their geological and geomorphological landform heritage.
The Global Geopark network is supported and facilitated by UNESCO and at the symposium, senior officers of UNESCO, the United Nations, the Institute of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the Global Geopark Network were in attendance to discuss the science and management of these parks.

Nevertheless, many are in areas of semi-natural habitat and so form a valuable network of locations at which informal recreation and the natural environment coexist.
Originally intended to protect sites of importance especially as waterfowl habitat, the Convention has broadened its scope over the years to cover all aspects of wetland conservation and wise use, recognizing wetlands as ecosystems that are extremely important for biodiversity conservation in general and for the well-being of human communities.
Geoparks are internationally-recognised areas encompassing one or more sites of scientific importance in which the geological heritage is safeguarded and sustainably managed, with strong local involvement.

China followed with some 85 national Geoparks across the country with 12 now accepted under the UNESCO Assistance to Global Geoparks programme.
In June 2004 the Chinese government through the Ministry of Lands and Resources with the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences held the 1st International Conference on Geoparks (organisers Jiang J. and Zhao X.) and opened the World Geoparks Office in Beijing.

The term "geopark" describes any site of geological and scientific interest in which the landscape might be used to create sustainable community projects from tourism.
Over the next few decades, Unesco aims to establish a global network of more than 500 geoparks in response to what it sees as the growing number of "geotourists", another Un-esco-coined term referring to those travellers with any sort of interest in the natural world and the communities that inhabit it.
Last year saw the first international geoparks conference held in Beijing and, as a result, China is now home to 10 of the 43 sites currently operating in 14 countries, including one in Qeshm in Iran.

The network has drawn together territories from across Europe that share these aims and which are now working together in an active and dynamic way to achieve them.
Although geology is always the main area of promotion in geoparks, network members adopt a holistic approach to the promotion of our natural and cultural heritage.
Although still less than 5 years old, the European Geoparks Network has made great advances in achieving its aims and is attracting increasing attention from communities across Europe as well as the wider geological community both at home in Europe but also from further afield.

At present there is, at different scales, the necessity to promote geology, protection and the geoparks: geotourism could be a one good manner to promote education in geology towards citizens of different ages.
It is clear for us that also a variety of geosite-, geopark- and natural- and national park projects can all contribute in parallel to the same kinds of targets.
There are three definitions of geoparks, none of them official or governmental: UNESCO geopark, the European geopark (allowing one or two per country), and the country geoparks that all are free to choose and promote.
