International PEN, the worldwide association of writers with 145 Centres in 104 Countries, exists to promote friendship and intellectual co-operation among writers everywhere, to fight for freedom of expression and represent the conscience of world literature.
The International PEN Foundation, which formerly had literary and educational purposes has ceased to exist and been replaced by a new organisation which shares these objectives, as well as being established to promote human rights.
International PEN is a company limited by guarantee and is a registered charity, number 1010627.

PEN is strictly non-political, a non-governmental organization in formal consultative relations with UNESCO and Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
International PEN is composed of 144 autonomous PEN Centres in 101 countries around the world, each of which are open to qualified writers, journalists, translators, historians and others actively engaged in any branch of literature, regardless of nationality, race, colour or religion.
International PEN's Writers in Prison Committee is a member of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange, a global network of non-governmental organisations that monitors censorship worldwide and campaigns to defend journalists, writers, Internet users and others who are persecuted for exercising their right to freedom of expression.

According to International PEN’s information, Yasser al-Habib, who has worked for several Arabic-language newspapers including the monthly al-Menbar (The Pulpit), was abducted on a Kuwait City street on the afternoon of 30 November 2003 by unknown individuals and taken away in an unmarked vehicle.
International PEN Writers in Prison Committee is seriously concerned about the case, and fears that Yasser al-Habib may be held solely for the peaceful expression of his opinions and therefore in violation of Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Kuwait is a signatory.
PEN is seriously concerned for his health and well-being, and seeks assurances that he is being well-treated in detention and urges that he is given full access to medical treatment, family visits and legal representation.

International PEN, the world association of writers representing members in 94 countries, has central to its mandate the promotion of the right to freedom of expression, which it sees as essential to the advancement of understanding between nations and cultures, and thus towards international peace and stability.
PEN commends Mr Hussain on his recommendations that all criminal defamation and libel laws be repealed in favour of civil laws, and that government officials and bodies be discouraged from bringing defamation cases as a means to silence their critics.
PEN was alarmed to note the Turkish International Association of Human Rights (IHD) reported that in the first half of 2001, over 1,500 individuals were before the courts for their writings or publications.

Representatives of International PEN will be present in Istanbul for the 21 September trial of author Elif Shafak, one of Turkey’s most respected writers, who is accused of “insulting Turkishness” under the notorious Article 301 of the Turkish Criminal Code.
PEN is calling on the Turkish authorities to review legislation that allows for the prosecution of writers and journalists in denial of their right to freedom of expression and to put an end, once and for all, to these trials.

Pens were fairly unheard of except for dip pens and quills.
As was true of those early pens, the first hard rubber pens were made as dip pens; that is, one would dip the pen in ink and write a few strokes and then dip the nib again and again until the text was completed.
While there are no known documents to confirm the number of pens sold during that era, the scarcity of their current existence suggests the numbers were very modest.

Today, the Ghanaian PEN Centre under the auspices of International PEN and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is co-hosting a regional conference of African PEN Centre to prepare for the second ever PEN African Conference in Senegal.
It may be of interest to know that African PEN centres and International PEN planned a number of preparatory meetings in support of the congress, so as to facilitate the work of the Senegal PEN Centre towards Dakar 2007.
Again, delegates from Africa PEN centres and International PEN reconvened during the 2005 PEN Congress in Bled, Slovenia, to select a shortlist of themes and confirmed dates of the Ghana seminar and preparatory meeting.

International PEN, the world association of writers with centres in 99 countries, is deeply disappointed that, despite further changes to the Penal Code, there remains repression of freedom of expression in Turkey.
PEN calls on the Turkish authorities to make further reviews of articles contained in the Penal Code that breach the international standards to which Turkey is committed.
PEN recommends that pending such review, all trials against writers and publishers on charges that contravene international standards be halted.

 The Origins of the Ball Point Pen
While ballpoint pens were new, the idea went back to 1888, when John Loud, of whom nothing is known but his name, patented a version but never went into production.
A different kind of ballpoint pen was invented by Frank Klimes, a Czech, in the early 1930s and manufactured by him and another Czech, Paul V. Eisner.
Reynolds developed a pen whose ink was delivered by gravity flow, which his attorney told him was different from the Biros, and so was patentable.

International PEN’s historic 73rd Congress closes today calling again for the end to insult and defamation laws worldwide and a commitment to supporting and protecting languages under threat.
Freedom of expression is central to International PEN’s work and this was reflected in 12 resolutions that were passed by the Assembly of Delegates, ranging from the imprisonment of writers in China, Iran, Uzbekistan, Eritrea, Cuba and Vietnam, killings of journalists in Mexico and Afghanistan and the forced closure of a television station in Venezuela.
In 2007, International PEN has been focussing on the issue of insult and defamation laws used to silence dissent and special focus was given to Turkey and to the prevalence of such laws across Africa.

Ten years after Nigerian novelist and PEN member Ken Saro-Wiwa was executed by the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha in Nigeria, the Assembly of Delegates condemned impunity for those who kill writers and journalists, issuing resolutions deploring the deaths of journalists in war zones and continuing assassinations of journalists in Mexico.
