 | | Paris, November 11 {No. 97-211}- Pierre Cornillon, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, yesterday received the UNESCO medal commemorating the Organization’s 50th anniversary, in recognition of his contribution to democracy, peace and justice. |
 | | He was the principal architect of the International Centre for Parliamentary Documentation and Technical Assistance Programme - forerunners of the IPU’s noteworthy Programme for the Promotion of Representative Democracy. |
 | | A well-known authority on parliamentary diplomacy and comparative parliamentary law, Mr Cornillon initiated a meeting of experts in co-operation with UNESCO which resulted in a declaration on democracy, adopted in Cairo on September 16 during the 161st session of the Inter-Parliamentary Council. |
