The Inter-Parliamentary Union is an international organization established in 1889 by William Randal Cremer (United Kingdom) and Frédéric Passy (France).
The IPU has worked for establishment of institutions at the inter-governmental level, including the United Nations, an organization with which it cooperates.
The Committee for a Democratic UN and the German Bundestag have expressed interest in the possibility of transforming the IPU into a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly[1].

 Arab Inter-parliamentary Union
The Constituent Conference of the Arab IPU was held in Damascus from 19 to 21 June 1974.
Since its foundation in 1974, the Arab IPU was keen to effectively participate in the activities of the IPU, especially after acquiring the status of an observer at the IPU’s 61st Conference held in Tokyo in 1974.
Euro-Arab Parliamentary Dialogue began in 1974, and was parallel to the Euro-Arab governmental Dialogue which also started in 1974, in view of the conviction that there is mutual interests in the establishing and the strengthening of an overall cooperation between the Arab and the West European Countries.

The IPU noted that the re-arrest of Senator Zardari indicated that his "prolonged detention" is based on "other than legal grounds" given that three months after the re-arrest "legal proceedings have yet to start".
The Resolution calling for the release of Senator Zardari was adopted by the IPU during its 170th session in Morrocco on 23 March 2002.

The International Parliamentary Union will be examining the Amnesty Bill for human rights violations and may discuss it during a regional seminar in Burundi.
This follows submissions by Opposition Leader Mahendra Chaudhry in August to the peak international Parliamentary body based in Geneva informing it of the controversial amnesty provisions of the Reconciliation and Unity Bill which government is adamant in bulldozing through parliament despite overwhelmingly strong objections to it.
IPU secretary general Anders Johnsson wrote back seeking particulars on the May 2000 coup and hostage crisis with regard to violation of human rights of the MPs concerned so that it could refer the issue to the IPU’s committee on the human rights of Parliamentarians.

The International Parliamentary Union [IPU] last week condemned the Sri Lankan police attack, on the July 15 protest organised by the opposition in Colombo, after PA and UNP delegations presented their cases before the IPU’s high profile five-member Human Rights Commission [HRC], political sources said yesterday.
The PA delegation to the IPU conference held in Berlin was led by the Deputy Speaker Anil Moonesinghe and included Deputy Minister Monty Gopallawa and Shantha Premaratne.
Opposition sources said that IPU’s condemnation was a measure aimed at ensuring that the Sri Lankan authorities do not resort to July 15 tactics to curb opposition activity.

The union selected Fathi Sorour, speaker of Egypt's People's Assembly, as chairman for one year but the decision did not go down well with Nabih Berri, speaker of the Lebanese Parliament.
One objective of the union was indeed to open a dialogue with non-Muslim societies and build a new international community based on peace, equality, democracy and the protection of under-privileged social classes.
