The institute's purpose, as formulated in the statutes, is "to engage in research concerning the conditions for peaceful relations between nations, groups and individuals".
Researchers come from a variety of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, including political science, sociology, anthropology, psychology, human geography, history, history of religion and philosophy.
The institute maintains a centre in Nicosia, Cyprus, known as the PRIO Cyprus Centre Through its network, projects and dialogue forums, the PRIO Cyprus Centre aims to foster cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, and strengthen regional cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean at large.

For international applicants seeking to begin their program in Oslo (the usual procedure for Northern Hemisphere students) applications can be submitted at any time to Bjørknes Worldwide Education, however there is an initial deadline of 15th March for the program beginning in the following August.
The Norwegian Government, through the International Scholarship Section (IS) of the Research Council of Norway, offers each academic year a pool of scholarships for advanced students and young researchers of certain (non-Norwegian) countries.
All other courses are taken at the ANU in Canberra and are principally taught by the academic staff of the Department of International Relations in the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies.

In all, counting internal displaced persons as well as international refugees, as many as thirty million people may have been forced to flee from their homes through the impact or the fear of war.
On the other hand, if development is viewed solely in terms of per capita wealth, it is certainly true that there is a correlation between prosperity and peace or, viewed in darker terms, a link between poverty and war.
Using a much narrower definition of war that excludes most modern armed conflict, one estimate indicates that in each of 1949 and 1950 there were six wars where as in 1989 and 1990 there were 13 and 15 wars respectively: Ruth Legers invard, World Military and Social Expenditures 1991.
