 IPHC Brief History Introduction
One of the most significant developments in recent Christianity is the appearance of many pentecostal denominations throughout the world during the past century.
The character of the church is to be seen in its name, which places it astride two major revival movements: the holiness revival of the late nineteenth century, and the pentecostal revival of the twentieth century.
The fundamental faith of the church is that God's power to redeem man and society is resident in Jesus Christ, Son of the Father, who sent the Holy Spirit into the world as the Agent of salvation.

Holiness churches, largely a product of the Methodist tradition, follow those who in the ethos of the 19th century camp meeting preserved a variation of the Wesleyan doctrine of “Christian perfection,” emphasizing a postconversion experience of “entire sanctification.” Distinctly “Holiness” churches do not speak in tongues; they are among the sharpest critics of the practice.

 Religious Movements Homepage: Pentecostalism
Most Pentecostals are taught or teach that the history of the Holy Spirit expressed among the Pentecostal tradition began with Charles Parham in Topeka, Kansas and/or at the Azusa revival led by William J. Seymour.
However, among most American Pentecostal denominations, it is believed that the "initial evidence" of Spirit baptism is the manifestation of glossolalia or what is commonly referred to as speaking in tongues but there are also those that believe that any number of charismata may evidence the baptism.
It is almost universally agreed upon by Pentecostals that "speaking in tongues" is a miraculous act in which a believer, with the aid of the Holy Spirit, speaks in a language without having knowledge of it.
