International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW)
During the 1999 war in the Balkans, NATO forces used about 11 tons of DU in missiles that were fired into the former Yugoslavia [1].
IPPNW deplores the use of depleted uranium weapons and supports the calls in the European Union and elsewhere for a ban on their use.
DU weapons may already be illegal under international law and international humanitarian law, and this case is being made in compelling fashion by members of the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms (IALANA), who have formed a working group to study this issue.

Letter from the Co-Presidents of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) to President Bush ...
The reductions in strategic nuclear weapons that have been announced as a key element of the NPR would be welcome as an important step toward US disarmament obligations were it not for the apparent decision to retain most of them in an inactive "responsive" force, ready to be re-deployed on short notice.
A resumption of nuclear testing in the US will inevitably lead to a global breakdown of the decade-long moratorium on testing, which has been one of the most promising developments in the global campaign to prevent further nuclear proliferation.
Giving officers in the field a nuclear "capability" to destroy an underground bunker, for example, increases the likelihood that the nuclear threshold will be crossed by military decision makers who would come to think of nuclear weapons as just one option among many.

PMag v03n5p29 -- Canadian Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War
"Nuclear war is the ultimate public health issue." This describes the rationale of the body of 2500 Canadian physicians and health workers who comprise the medical anti-nuclear organization.
Physicians, focussing particularly on the human biological, psychological and social effects of a nuclear catastrophe, aim for the total abolition of nuclear weapons, rather than accepting nuclear deterrence at lower levels of armaments.
Concern about the involvement of Soviet physicians in abuse of human rights has been a difficult area, as has the organization's insistence on confining itself to the nuclear issue alone when a dissident Soviet peace activist physician was imprisoned.

Yorkshire CND - International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War Statement on the Conclusion of the 2000 NPT ...
Although the final document does not explicitly call for the de-alerting of nuclear weapons now on high alert, it does call for "concrete agreed measures to further reduce the operational status of nuclear weapons systems." This is, effectively, a call for de-alerting nuclear weapons to help avoid nuclear war by accident or miscalculation.
This interpretation has allowed the nuclear weapon states to essentially defer forever their obligation to eliminate their nuclear arsenals since general and complete international disarmament is, at best, a goal that may only be achieved in an unforseeable future.
The 1996 World Court Advisory Opinion on Nuclear Weapons, which IPPNW was instrumental in securing, played a significant role in the deliberations of the 2000 NPT Review Conference and is cited in the final document as a legal basis for some of the commitments the parties have agreed to undertake with regard to nuclear disarmament.

These forms of nuclear radiation are measured in rads (radiation-absorbed-dose), which is defined as teh absorption of five ten millionths joule per gram of abosorbing material (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, 1982).
The nuclear radiation from the atomic bomb’s explosion was not the main cause of death, but it did still have serious results.
The reason why the nuclear radiation was not the main caused of deaths or injuries was that the atomic bomb was detonated so high in the atmosphere; approximately five hundred and seventy meters in Hiroshima, and approximately five hundred and ten meters in Nagasaki (Outlaw Labs).
