Powerlifting is an official sport for athletes with physical disabilities at the Paralympic Games, and for athletes with cognitive disabilities at the Special Olympics World Games.

 About the Author: Mauro Di Pasquale, MD
He was the first Canadian Powerlifter to become a World Champion and first Canadian Powerlifter to total 10 times bodyweight in any weight class and the only Canadian to ever total ten times bodyweight in two weight classes.
In the early 1980's, Mauro initiated and developed the IPF drug testing protocols and procedures and was the chairman of the International Powerlifting Federation's Medical Committee for eight years (1979 - 1987).
At present Mauro is the President of the Pan American (North, Central and South America, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean Islands) Powerlifting Federation and the North American Vice President of the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF).

 IPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championships
The 2004 International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) North American Regional Powerlifting Championships was held in the newly constructed Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the campus of Nova Southeastern University; in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Team USA selections for this international event were selected based upon on their best Wilks formula score from a USAPL National Championship, or an IPF International Championship that took place during the past twelve (12) months.
As part of this championship, a USAPL international qualifier was included and offered for lifters interested in making the "Top 35 list" of those to be considered for the USA Team that shall compete at the 2004 IPF Men's World Powerlifting Championships in South Africa later this year.

*NOTE: In 1968, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) voted to be the controlling body for international powerlifting, but rescinded their control a year later in 1969 without ever holding a sanctioned contest.
From what I remember of the early years of Powerlifting was that it was not that big of a sport for the first 5 or 6 years.
Also with the formation of the IPF, the Squat was moved to the first position with the Bench Press to be contested second.
