As a backlash against the media, largely caused by the supposed involvement of the press in the death of Princess Diana in 1997, France passed one of the toughest restrictions on news photography in the Western world.

International Press Institute (IPI), The Global Network of Editors, Media Executives and Leading Journalists is a Justice Initiative partner institution in the area of Freedom of Information.
In October 1950, 34 editors from 15 countries met at Columbia University in New York to form a global organisation dedicated to the promotion and protection of press freedom and the improvement of the practices of journalism.
The idea for such an organisation evolved in the aftermath of the Second World War and the International Press Institute (IPI) was founded on the belief that a free press would contribute to the creation of a better world.

From October 9 to 11, 2006 a high-level five member delegation representing the International press freedom and freedom of expression mission (also referred to as the International mission), which is comprised of international press freedom and media development organisations, undertook a fact-finding and advocacy mission to Sri Lanka.
While the International Mission examined the current situation of the Sinhala, Tamil and English language media in Sri Lanka, it paid particular attention to the repression of the Tamil language media, which has come under heavy and sustained attack, especially in areas affected by the fighting.
During the mission, the international organisations sought to strengthen dialogue and relations with the media community in Sri Lanka, and highlight grave concerns with authorities and combatant parties over the situation for media and freedom of expression in the country.

 World Press Freedom Day
The Vienna-based International Press Institute noted that with 54 journalists killed in 2002 and 23 journalists killed since the start of this year--14 of them during the war in Iraq--the need for better safety for journalists has never been more urgent (see the "IPI Death Watch").
World Press Freedom Day also reminds the world that in dozens of countries, publications are censored, fined, suspended, and closed down, while journalists, editors, and publishers are harassed, attacked, imprisoned, detained, and murdered, as the Toronto-based International Freedom of Information Exchange (IFEX) communique observed on 29 April.
The World Press Freedom Committee on 3 May will highlight the urgent need to eliminate so-called "insult laws" that protect presidents and other officials from public scrutiny of their conduct in office and in certain countries are used ruthlessly against journalists.

 Press Institute hears reporters' stories
The International Press Institute, a Vienna, Austria-based media freedom group, sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell last week to protest against the treatment of Krobath and other journalists and the U.S. policy requiring journalists to have special visas.
Anthony Loewstedt, the institute's head of documentation, said U.S. embassies "were very much to blame" for not informing journalists they need visas, even when other business travellers from their countries don't.
Krobath said he thought he didn't need a press visa to attend the screening and interview Affleck because he would do the writing in Austria, where he is the chief editor for the movie magazine Skip.

In a press release received here on Saturday, the mission found that journalists were also under attack from Maoists, particularly since the ceasefire withdrawal in January.
Of particular concern was the increasing involvement of the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) and armed police forces in press freedom and freedom of expression violations, as well as interference in the media sphere.

Edinburgh --- The level of press freedom worldwide is "shocking", the director of the International Press Institute told the body's annual congress.
Of 194 monitored countries, 73 had a "free press situation", 54 were listed as "partly free" and 67 had no "free press" at all.
The IPI is a network of editors, media executives and leading journalists from some 120 countries dedicated to press freedom.

VIENNA -- (EFE) -- Cuban President Fidel Castro's security apparatus continues to ``repress Cuban journalists who attempt to file independent reports on what is happening in their country,'' the International Press Institute charged in a report released today.
Although Havana has authorized two U.S. media outlets, CNN and The Associated Press, to open permanent bureaus on the island, foreign reporters are threatened and often expelled, the IPI asserted.
In addition, legislation regulating anti-government propaganda or insults directed at government officials mandates prison terms of three months to one year, which may be extended to three years if the attacks are directed against Castro or members of the National Assembly or the Council of State.

At the Board Meeting of the International Press Institute, held in Warsaw, Poland, last Saturday the Executive Board voted unanimously to add Ethiopia to the IPI Watch List while agreeing that South Korea should be removed.
Regarding the draft press law, Fritz said, "The government has promised to send a copy of the most recent version of this law to IPI and we hope they do so.
It is damaging to the reputation of Ethiopia to have journalists languishing in jail for a failure to pay excessive bail fees.

 Global Press Groups Condemn Attacks on Journalists in Americas
In a June 5 statement, the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) said it joined a number of global press advocacy groups in issuing a series of resolutions on violence against journalists, their murders and the breach of press freedoms in the Americas, including in Cuba and Venezuela.
The June 4 resolutions of the Global Coordinating Committee of Press Freedom Organizations, meeting in Moscow, said the majority of the 298 murders of journalists in the past 19 years in the Americas have not been resolved and that violence against the press by organized crime has increased in several countries in the region.
The report said Venezuela remained on the International Press Institute's "watch list" of countries with a growing tendency toward suppression or restriction of press freedom.  Another press group, the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders, expressed similar concerns, the report said.  The report’s section on Venezuela is available on the State Department Web site.

In 1950, a United Nations task force for press freedom established the International Code of Ethics, stressing the concept that freedoms of the press and publishing are basic human rights.

An international media watchdog accused the United States on Tuesday of violating press freedom in Iraq, saying Washington is setting a poor example for a future Iraqi government.
The International Press Institute, a network of reporters, editors and media executives, also called on the United States to protect reporters in Iraq.
Dick Custin, a spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw, said he could not comment on the institute’s accusations but stressed that the United States remains committed to press freedom.
