International Rugby Players Association (IRPA) chairman Tony Dempsey said players wanted the IRB to follow the lead of other major sports, including the soccer and cricket World Cups, by sharing their massive windfalls with the competitors.
Dempsey said he had written to the IRB in January asking for a meeting in order to sort out the intellectual property issue, but was told to take up the issue with individual unions.
The former Australian international said he was confident the IRB would reconsider its position but could not say what might happen if they did not change their mind.

The Australian Rugby Union gave the International Rugby Board more than $30 million after the 2003 World Cup tournament that was hosted by Australia with a proposal to use that money to develop the game in Samoa, Tonga and Fiji and lure their top players to play for their respective Island teams.
The paper explained that the Australian Rugby Union had given the more than $30 million to the IRB with a stipulation that the money be placed in a trust fund to be used to develop rugby in the South Pacific nations of Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji.
But the IRB, which is the world rugby governing body, ignored Australia's recommendation after giving it its endorsement and used the funds to develop the game around the globe.
