The Socialist International, deeply concerned at the continuing conflict in the Middle East, by the pain and tragedy which continues to afflict innocent civilians, women and children, once again strongly reiterates its call for an end to the hostilities in the region and for an urgent and immediate ceasefire.
The Socialist International (SI) held a meeting of its Committee for the CIS and the Caucasus in Moscow on 19-20 May 2006 for an in-depth discussion on the prospects for social democracy in Russia, in the countries of the CIS and the Caucasus, building on its previous gathering in Kiev last December.
The Socialist International is deeply concerned by the deteriorating situation in Nepal and the escalating confrontation that has led to the shooting and detention of demonstrators, and calls upon the government of King Gyanendra to immediately stop the violence against the citizens of the country and take steps toward restoring democratic rule.

 Hal Draper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Draper was initially a member of the Young People's Socialist League, then the youth affiliate of the Socialist Party of America.
By 1940 he was part of a faction within the SWP which objected to the internal regime of that party and was developing an analysis of the USSR as a bureaucratic collectivist society in which a new class, the state bureaucracy, held social and state power.
In 1968 ISC became the International Socialists as it expanded nationally.

While the SWP had undoubtedly a sort of pre-eminence on the far left, it was by no means clear that it had really overcome the difficulties which had traditionally handicapped marxist groups in their attempt to form serious parties to the left of Labour.
Their new organisation, the Socialist Labour League, formed in 1958, and the looser movement of the "New Left", were the two main outgrowths of that crisis.
Socialist Worker was undoubtedly one of the big successes of IS - a popular socialist paper with a genuine audience among rank and file trade unionists, built with the dedicated efforts of a few professional journalists and thousands of IS members and other supporters who sent in local reports as well as selling the paper.

It is a distraction for us to be spending time analyzing their politics, discussing their paper, etc. It sucks us into the otherworldly milieu of the small sects.

Unlike the still-born Fourth International we did not have a Trotsky who embodied the experience of the October Revolution and who could write such a programme.
Their paper is by far the most readable of any, and I would put Socialist Worker rather than anything else into the hands of any contact that I sought to swing leftwards, even if I have occasional criticisms of the line.
The earlier socialists were either purely political or syndicalist and found no way of harmonising their differences in a revolutionary way.

So declared Zanny Begg, DSP youth organiser in Brisbane, as she closed the 17th national conference of the Democratic Socialist Party on January 8 in Sydney to the applause of over 200 delegates and participants.
In the international work report, DSP national secretary John Percy reported on plans for closer collaboration with the PRD in Indonesia and the Manila-Rizal section of the Communist Party of the Philippines, and a proposal for an Asia-Pacific anti-imperialist conference at Easter 1998.
In the student work report, Sean Healy noted the significant gains in 1996 of Resistance, the socialist youth group, in building the fight back against the cuts to education as well as in establishing stronger bases on campuses around the country.

I think what the US doesn't like about all this is that these countries are making their own arrangements to solve various problems and make progress, thereby demonstrating that no one needs US "help".
Venezuela is beginning to look at expanding their value-added industries in respect to oil though, so even that may become a non-factor.
Right now the US is preoccupied with keeping the US public from realizing how bad Iraq really is and how bad Bush really is. There will likely be a Democratic Congress after 2006, followed by a Democratic president and a Republican Congress in 2008.
