The reasons we see ourselves as a resource and why we can be effective in helping the Palestinian non-violent movement is when they start to march or protest alone, without internationals there, the army will use lethal force against them.
When internationals are present and make our presence known (we write signs in English, chant in English; sometimes we go surround the Palestinians; we identify ourselves with shirts), we've found that the soldiers won't use lethal force, and usually won't even shoot into the crowd with rubber bullets.
Once, with about 250 international volunteers and at least as many local university students we stood arm-in-arm and formed a corridor on the road for people to walk through the checkpoint.

The soldier, son of a poor Beduin family from the north of Israel, is accused of manslaughter in the death last year of British International Solidarity Movement member Tom Hurndall.

This June I attended a “training session” of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), an organization of volunteers whose purpose is to obstruct Israeli defense forces attempting to protect the civilian population from terrorist acts.
In articles on the ISM website where they discuss their goals of dismantling Israel by supporting Palestinian terrorists they use euphemisms such as “legitimate resistance” or support for “legitimate armed struggle” while claiming that they are nonviolent.
I was advised if I wanted to train with the ISM I needed to attend an orientation lecture at The New College of San Francisco which was being given by an Arab-American named Jess Ghannam, a psychoanalyst and professor at the University of California Medical School.
