The Tibetan Independence Movement is a movement to establish historical Tibet, comprising the three traditional provinces of Ü-Tsang, Amdo, and Kham, as an independent country.
Support for the movement in Tibet is illegal and the movement is largely led by Tibetans in exile with the support of organizations and individuals worldwide.
The status of Tibet before 1950, especially in the period between 1912 and 1950, is largely in dispute between supporters and opponents of Tibetan independence.

The International Tibet Independence Movement (www.rangzen.com) was founded on March 19, 1995 by Thubten Jigme Norbu (Oldest Brother of The Dalai Lama and Retired Professor at Indiana University) and Dr. Lawrence Gerstein (Professor at Ball State University and President of ITIM) to secure Tibet's independence through non-violent methods.
The Sierra Friends of Tibet's purpose is to raise awareness of Tibet; to advocate self-determination for the Tibetan people; to end the illegal occupation, the destruction of the natural environment, the eradication of Tibetan Culture, and the continuing genocide of the Tibetan people by the Chinese Communist government.
The Dalai Lama fled Tibet for India after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. ; His health is a matter of serious concern for the Tibetan movement worldwide, which fears a leadership vacuum when the high-profile spiritual leader dies.

Independence, or complete self-governance free from external control, is one mode of implementing the right to self-determination.
Many writers equate sovereignty with independence, and define sovereignty as the fundamental authority of a state to exercise its powers without being subservient to any outside authority.

I did the Translation, but I cut quite a bit that was in other articles, and I feel that the actual article doesn't really touch on the movement as an organization, as opposed to the movement as an ideology.
This is an essay that tries to present information that most Free Tibet pamphlets and articles omit, and builds the argument that campaigning to "free" Tibet is both socially and morally irresponsible."
As early as 1988, The Dalai Lama did make clear that he wasn't advocating for Tibetan independence and as such, the Dalai lama cannot be said to lead the independence movement.

Bloomington- On Saturday January 22, 2005, the Indiana University chapter of Students for a Free Tibet- in conjunction with the International Tibet Independence Movement- proudly hosts an evening with Ngawang Sangdrol, Tibetan nun and former political prisoner.
Since its occupation of Tibet, China has committed what can only be called genocide in the region, killing over 1.2 million Tibetans, destroying over 6000 monasteries, brutally suppressing anyone who dares to speak out against Chinese rule, and doing anything and everything to undermine the religion and culture of the Tibetan people.
After spending the past few years in the U.S. seeking medical treatment and promoting independence and human rights in Tibet, she will soon be joining thousands of other Tibetan refugees in India, for as an ex-political prisoner, there is no future for her in her home country.

As Tibet’s is the only non-violent freedom struggle in the world, it is indescribably sad that such a movement is being spurned by China and ignored by the international community.
The international Free Tibet Movement, in alliance with the Tibet government in-exile, should consider with great seriousness a reformulation of its non-violent strategic policy.

Ani Pachen or Lemdha Pachen was born in 1933 in Gonjo district in Kham province of Tibet.
