ICANN Yokohama Meeting Topic: Introduction of New Top-Level Domains Expression of Interest #26
The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions is submitting this expression of interest, on behalf of a group of international trade union organisations and their national affiliated organisations.
This purpose of this database, however, is primarily to maintain information on international and national trade union organisations, and not union locals or branches, many of which already have their own web site.
We would also expect that, at least in the early days, trade union organisations from the wealthier industrialised countries would make up a large proportion of the registrations, since the majority of workers with access to the Internet is currently based in these parts of the world.

The ICFTU also maintains close links with the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) (which includes all ICFTU European affiliates) and Global Union Federations, which link together national unions from a particular trade or industry at international level.
Alleging Communist domination of the WFTU's central institutions, a large number of non-communist national trade union federations (including the U.S., the British TUC, the French CFDT, the Italian CISL and the Spanish UGT) seceded and created the rival ICFTU at a conference in London attended by representatives of nearly 48 million members in 53 countries.
The publication of that report is usually accompanied by extensive press coverage of the violations of trade union rights around the globe, often focussing on the numbers of people killed simply for being members of unions.

New Statesman: Bill jordan - promoting the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions around the world
Jordan talks fondly of a global "family" of bodies centred on the ICFTU in alliance with the trade union advisory committee of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the international trade union secretariats that represent the occupational and sectoral divisions between workers.
Jordan would love to detach the word "trade" from union and form "labour unions" -- a new international that would help tear down the walls that weaken the "global house of labour".
But he warns: "What I have in mind is not a well-meaning club where trade unions from better-off nations offer help to those in the developing world." Jordan is keen to resist any condescension, and wants to integrate the southern part of the world more fully in the international labour movement.
