 International Conference on Physics Education
Its broad objective is to simulate and facilitate international cooperation in physics and the worldwide development of science by encouraging research and education.
suggesting ways in which the facilities for the study of physics at all levels might be improved, stimulating experiments at all levels, and giving help to physics teachers in all countries in incorporating current knowledge of physics, physics pedagogy, and the results of research in physics education into their courses and curricula.
Although study of physics per se continues to be of vital interest and contemporary applications of physics span many exciting areas, the traditional physics course is no longer able to attract the numbers it used to.

In the end, many mathematicians work for purely aesthetic reasons, viewing Mathematics more as an art ('pure mathematics') rather than for its practical application ('applied mathematics'); this is the same kind of motivation as poets and philosophers may experience, and no more explicable.
The physically important concept of vectors, generalized to vector spaces and studied in linear algebra, belongs to the two branches of structure and space.
An important field in applied mathematics is statistics, which uses probability theory as a tool and allows the description, analysis and prediction of phenomena where chance plays a part.

A high degree of competence in the subject area of physics is one important prerequisite, being a great challenge in itself in view of the rapid and still accelerating pace of scientific and technological development.
In addition to the progress within physics and to the important developments linking physics with inter- and transdisciplinary areas, we have to keep track of the broader contexts, into which our science is embedded and from which it emerges.
Physics as a mental challenge is driven by the conviction, that the universe is intelligible by the human mind.

INTERNATIONAL UNION of PURE and APPLIED PHYSICS
This conference followed the general plan of its predecessors at CERN and Fermi Lab (see Report for 1984_1987) in its intention to bring together, in working sessions, scientists at the forefront of research and those active in teaching to discuss how recent developments in the field could be incorporated into secondary school and undergraduate curricula.
This conference, a joint activity of IUPAP and ASPEN, had as its purpose the exploration of ideas and the exchange of information concerning the uses of experimental physics in the education of students.
These include an International Journal of Selected Reprints in Physics Education, a Directory of Journals in Physics Education, and a Reader on Research in Physics Education and Teacher Training.

Mathematicians value especially simplicity and generality and when these seemingly incompatible properties combine in a piece of mathematics, as in a unifying generalization for several subfields, or in a helpful tool for common calculations, often that piece of mathematics is called beautiful.
Since the result of mathematics inspired by mathematics is often pure mathematics and thus has no applications outside of mathematics yet, the only value it has is in its aesthetics.
Surprisingly often, it has happened that pure mathematics, which was considered only of interest to mathematicians, has become applied mathematics because of some new insight, as if it anticipated later needs.
