Because diplomatic negotiations form the basis of new international law, and because diplomacy operates within the framework of extant international law, the study of diplomacy is an important component in the study of international political economy.

International Political Economy (IPE) is the rapidly developing social science field of study that attempts to understand international and global problems using an eclectic interdisciplinary array of analytical tools and theoretical perspectives.
Political scholars may hesitate to engage in this analysis because of the necessity to master difficult theories and arcane terminology, but there is no riper area for IPE analysis.
