Internet Explorer 6 was released in late 2001, and itself a minor improvement over IE5 which was originally released in 1999.
The release has only been identified as a security update, which means the rendering engine could still be identical to that in IE6 ("Internet Explorer 7.0, designed to add new levels of security to Windows XP SP2 while maintaining the level of extensibility and compatibility that customers have come to expect.").
The IE7 release is going to be coded in a relatively short timespace and I would rather MS start from scratch if they are going to change the rendering engine.

It makes me realise that IE7 is not going to be written ground up and also its not stripped out of the underlying windows security mechanism(*fiasco*).
Moreover, IE7 is long overdue, and I hope to all hell that if they plan to spend another three years with the same piece of software, that they will at least look far enough forward to cover possible forthcoming technologies.
