 Internet Research Ethics
Internet research is carried out across a broad range of academic disciplines, including media studies, cultural studies, literature, studies of the arts and sociology.
In relation to research ethics, the construction of such 'utopic spaces' nested within commercial domains of the Internet, is a cause for concern, as it substantiates claims that participants are not fully aware of the conditions under which they communicate through Internet technologies.
Academic research ideally endeavours to reflect the range and versatility of the media that it considers and we should avoid any unintentional erasure of minority groups in research that might result from considering their textual output as private social interaction.

Coomber: Using the Internet for Survey Research
Overall, this research (Coomber, 1997a; 1997b) suggested that the picture of adulteration/dilution practices being built up for the UK in the 1990s was likely to be more broadly generalizable to other countries.
Moreover, depending on the research population, this may be ethically prohibitive: for instance in my own research outlined earlier on drug dealers, the tracing or monitoring of respondents to any degree might have jeopardised the research itself and/or render the respondents open to prosecution.
It is, however, primarily the responsibility of the designer of the research to be aware of the issues that might produce a non-response bias (Shipman, 1988) and weight the responses appropriately.

Internet Society (ISOC) All About The Internet: History of the Internet
The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information dissemination, and a medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location.
There is the technological evolution that began with early research on packet switching and the ARPANET (and related technologies), and where current research continues to expand the horizons of the infrastructure along several dimensions, such as scale, performance, and higher level functionality.
Internet was based on the idea that there would be multiple independent networks of rather arbitrary design, beginning with the ARPANET as the pioneering packet switching network, but soon to include packet satellite networks, ground-based packet radio networks and other networks.
