Slashdot trolling phenomena - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Slashdot trolling is a subset and a microcosm of Internet trolling in general.
Disruptive trolls are those which intend to disrupt the normal flow of things on Slashdot, either by decreasing the signal-to-noise ratio or by causing the pages to render incorrectly.
Trolls that don't fall into the other three categories are idiosyncratic, and their existence is a result of an inside joke related to the workings of Slashdot culture or history or of geek culture itself.

On the Internet, a troll is a person who posts messages that create controversy or an angry response without adding content to the discussion, often intentionally, merely as a ludibrium.
Though technically different from flaming, which is an unmistakable direct personal attack, trolls often resort to innuendo or misdirection in the pursuit of their objective, which is to create controversy for its own sake, discredit those with whom they disagree, or sabotage discussion by creating an intimidating atmosphere.
Trolls are thought by some, including themselves, to play some role in the limiting of groupthink, and the prevention of forming any kind of false conciousness.

Internet troll - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Self-proclaimed trolls often style themselves as Devil's Advocates or gadflies or culture jammers, challenging the dominant discourse and assumptions of the forum they are trolling in an attempt to subvert and introduce different ways of thinking.
The troll attempts to pass as a legitimate participant, sharing the group's common interests and concerns; the newsgroups members, if they are cognizant of trolls and other identity deceptions, attempt to both distinguish real from trolling postings and, upon judging a poster a troll, make the offending poster leave the group.
Effect change in user opinions: A troll may state extreme positions to make his or her actual beliefs seem moderate (This often involves sock puppeteering, where the bad cop is a sock-puppet troll.) or, alternatively, play the role of Devil's advocate to strengthen opposing convictions [with which he or she usually actually agrees].

Internet troll/draft - Encyclopedia Glossary Meaning Explanation Internet troll/draft
On the Internet, troll is a slang term for a person who posts messages intended to create controversy or provoke an angry response rather than to add content to a discussion.
The term trolling, like the term flamebait, originated as a fishing metaphor: like people who troll for fish, people on the internet were dragging a conversational lure through a group, baiting for a particular response, often anger or argument.
An affirmative strategy in dealing with trolling behavior is to describe preferred behaviors, to affirm the capacity of a person to perform according to those expectations and to recognize the value of the preferred behavior.

On the Internet, troll is a slang term for a person alleged to have posted messages that create controversy or provoke an angry response without adding content to a discussion, often intentionally, as a ludibrium.
Though technically different from flaming, which is an unmistakable direct personal attack, alleged trolls often resort to innuendo or misdirection in the pursuit of their objective, which is assumed to be the purpose of creating controversy for its own sake, discrediting those with whom they disagree, or sabotaging discussion by creating an intimidating atmosphere.
The role of Internet trolls is also disputed, some viewing them as playing some role in the limiting of groupthink, and the prevention of forming any kind of false consciousness by acting as devil's advocate.
