dorsal interossei muscles (foot, anatomy) - General Practice Notebook   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The dorsal interossei of the foot are four muscles on each side which act to:
The dorsal interossei are larger than the plantar interossei.
The innervation of the dorsal interossei of the foot is the lateral plantar nerve (S2, S3), either its deep branch for the first to third interossei or its superficial branch for the fourth interossei.

  Chapter 11: THE HAND
The lumbricals are associated with the tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus in the palm.
The lumbricals and palmar interossei are inserted into the hood, whereas the dorsal interossei are generally inserted into both the hood and the proximal phalanx deep to the hood.
The deep palmar arch, which lies on the interossei, is formed by the termination of the radial artery and the deep branch of the ulnar artery.

Dorsal interossei of the hand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The dorsal interossei of the hand are muscles that occupy the space between the metacarpals.
They are specified as 'dorsal' to contrast them with the palmar interossei, which are located on the anterior side of the metacarpals.
Between the heads of dorsal interossei two, three, and four, a perforating branch from the deep palmar arch is transmitted.

The Interossei volares (Palmar interossei), three in number, are smaller than the Interossei dorsales, and placed upon the volar surfaces of the metacarpal bones, rather than between them.
From this account it may be seen that each finger is provided with two Interossei, with the exception of the little finger, in which the Abductor takes the place of one of the pair.
In addition to this the Interossei, in conjunction with the Lumbricales, flex the first phalanges at the metacarpophalangeal joints, and extend the second and third phalanges in consequence of their insertions into the expansions of the Extensor tendons.

The four Interossei (between the bones, pronounced "inter-ah-sigh) muscles of the hand are considered "intrinsic hand muscles", as opposed to the "extrinsic hand muscles" lying outside of the hand proper.
The 1st Dorsal Interossei is the largest of the 4.
The Role Of The 1st Dorsal Interossei In The Left HandIt is interesting that we usually think of the muscle action used to press the strings to the frets as coming from the long flexors in the forearm.

Their long, slender tendons insert on an indistinct condensation of deep fascia between the distal end of the respective splint bones and the abaxial aspects of the proximal sesamoid bones, Figure 1.
interossei receive nerve branches from the branch of the metacarpal/metatarsal nerve which also innervates the m.
Specific anesthesia or extirpation of the interossei would be quite difficult though the tendons could be transected near the fetlock.

eMedicine - Intrinsic Plus Hand : Article by Jessica Gillespie, MD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The dorsal interossei are abductors, whereas the ventral interossei are adductors.
The volar interossei each only have one muscle head and form the ulnar lateral band of the index finger and the radial lateral band of the ring and little finger.
Proximal intrinsic release is indicated, and the lateral tendons of all interossei, including the abductor digiti quinti tendon, are resected at the level of the MP joints.

The Interossei dorsales (Dorsal interossei), four in number, are situated between the metatarsal bones.
They are bipenniform muscles, each arising by two heads from the adjacent sides of the metatarsal bones between which it is placed; their tendons are inserted into the bases of the first phalanges, and into the aponeurosis of the tendons of the Extensor digitorum longus.

The interossei muscles abduct and adduct the fingers relative to the middle finger in the position of rest.
Note that the individual interossei insert either onto the lateral (1 and 2) or onto the medial (3 and 4) side of a finger.
Note that the interossei also insert into the extensor expansions and hence contribute to flexion and the MCP joint and extension at the IP joints.

The dorsal interossei abduct the fingers from midline, while the palmar interossei adduct the second, fourth, and fifth fingers.

 PakMediNet - View Abstract
There is a great controversy on the insertion of interossei and lumbrical muscles of the human foot in the literature.
Anomalous insertions of planter interossei were observed in 11 (9.8%) limbs, of dorsal interossei in 12 (10.7%) limbs, of lumbrical muscles in 24 (21.4%) limbs.
Anomalous distal attachments of interossei and lumbricales may be the part of evolutionary process of human beings, which may or may not hinder the normal human locomotion.

II. Osteology. 6d. 4. Comparison of the Bones of the Hand and Foot. Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
The middle part is made up of slightly movable long bones which assist the carpus or tarsus in distributing forces and also give greater breadth for the reception of such forces.
The separation of the individual bones from one another allows of the attachments of the Interossei and protects the dorsi-palmar and dorsi-plantar vascular anastomoses.
The terminal portion is the most movable, and its separate elements enjoy a varied range of movements, the chief of which are flexion and extension.

Intrinsic foot muscle wasting becomes apparent when hollow spaces between the metatarsals are evident of Interossei atrophy (Sabir and Lyttle, 1982).
Wasting of the Abductor Hallucis and Abductor Digiti Minimi change the contour of the medial and lateral borders of the foot and exaggerates the hollow of the medial longitudinal arch (Sabir and Lyttle, 1982).

After sending the hypothenar motor branch to the abductor quinti muscle, the remaining deep motor branch exits the pisohamate hiatus and crosses the palm, innervating the dorsal interossei and the third and forth lumbricals.
First, a lesion of the deep motor branch will spare sensation and innervation to the hypothenar muscles, while the interossei and lumbrical muscles will be involved.
A lesion that is just proximal to or at the hypothenar branch will also spare sensation but will involve not only the interossei and the lumbricals but the hypothenar muscles as well.

Piano Technique : Anatomy of the Hand and its relevance to a fluent finger technique
When the knuckle joint is fully extended the Interossei are parallel to, and in line with the palm and finger bone.
You will notice this by a most peculiar feeling within the palms of your hands : the interossei, as they become thicker, are pushing out the palm bones widening your hands.
Once the interossei have become strong enough to support the hand and arm it is time for the flexors and lumbricals to phase out their action.
