Topic: Interplanetary internet

Interplanetary Internet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Interplanetary Internet, as presently conceived, is a set of floating nodes in space which can communicate with each other.
Because of the large speed of light delays involved with interplanetary distances, the IPN needs a new set of protocols and technology that are tolerant to large delays.
The InterPlanetary Internet study at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) was started by a team of scientists at JPL led by Adrian Hooke and Vinton Cerf.

Electronic Music Forum - Analogik: Interplanetary Internet?!?
The objective of the Interplanetary Internet project is to define the architecture and protocols necessary to permit interoperation of the Internet resident on Earth with other remotely located internets resident on other planets or spacecraft in transit.
While the Earth's Internet is basically a "network of connected networks", the Interplanetary Internet may therefore be thought of as a "network of disconnected Internets".
The Interplanetary Internet Study is funded by DARPA's Next Generation Internet Initiative, and presently consists of a core team of researchers from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, MITRE Corporation, SPARTA, Global Science and Technology and consulting researchers from USC/ISI, UCLA and CalTech.

 Timekeeping in the Interplanetary Internet
The Interplanetary Internet (IPIN) consists of Earth stations, Mars planetary orbiters, base stations and exploration vehicles participating in a space mission.
In the Mars internet, orbiters and surface stations may have only intermittent connectivity, while in the DSN segment real-time connectivity is possible only at scheduled opportunities and then only with very long delays.
When we move from the static earth internet to the dynamic interplanetary internet these delays fluctuate heavily and become quite large.

 Threshold of interplanetary Internet
According to interplanetary Internet proponents, in coming decades, even far-flung solar system outposts could be just a few keystrokes away.
Any interplanetary Internet also would have to take into account planetary rotation and orbital motion that would routinely take a transmitting entity out of the line of sight of a receiving entity.
A study of the ways an interplanetary Internet might be organized is under way, underwritten by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and including researchers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Mitre Corp., several private sector firms and a handful of universities, including UCLA and CalTech.

The Interplanetary Internet (IPN) has a growing number of proponents, including Vint Cerf, a co-designer of the TCP/IP protocol and who is often referred to as the "father of the Internet." The IPN would form a backbone connecting a series of hubs on or around planets, ships, and at other points in space.
In the case of Mars, these hubs could be installed on a series of satellites circling the planet.
Earth-bound Internet and cell-phone users wont be surfing the IPN any time soon, but the research that goes into the interplanetary network could spark innovations in new or existing terrestrial networks.

Many more interplanetary missions are planned for the next two decades, which would mean that there would be scores of spacecraft and robots throughout the solar system.
The proposed solution therefore, is to make use of special "interplanetary gateways", that link together Internets on different planets and their moons.
There are several projects going on at the same time for this "interplanetary internet".

Wired News: Pushing the Internet Into Space
Through a project called the interplanetary internet, Hooke and networking guru Vint Cerf, co-creator the internet's TCP/IP protocol, have been working for the past six years to develop a standard for communicating in disconnected environments, where an uninterrupted two-way dialog isn't possible.
Another early iteration of the interplanetary internet concept is a standard called Coherent File Distribution Protocol (CFDP), used in spacecraft including the Deep Impact mission, the Messenger probe to Mercury.
CFDP allows an instrument to record an observation in a file and transmit the file to Earth without having to consider whether physical transmission is possible at that time, according to the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems, an international body that develops space communications standards.

 An international, interplanetary Internet - Space.com - MSNBC.com
In a sign of cosmic communications to come, last week mission controllers sent signals to a Mars-orbiting European spacecraft, which relayed the instructions to NASA's Spirit rover on the surface, and a signal was returned to Earth back along the same path.
NASA has used its own orbiters to communicate with surface probes at Mars before, but the Feb. 6 "pioneering demonstration," as officials called it, was the first to involve multiple nations.
Other plans are underway for eventually creating a true Interplanetary Internet that is more like the one you're using to read this story.

Wired 8.01: Vint Cerf is taking the Web into outer space - reserve your .mars address now.
One of the most celebrated tech architects of the last century - and now chief Internet strategist for MCI WorldCom - Cerf is deep in a project to move the Net into outer space.
The project, dubbed Interplanetary Internet (IPN), calls for space probes and satellites to serve as Net gateways, conveying data packets to and from Earth and among themselves.
An interplanetary backbone was the answer." Early in 1998, Cerf shared a space-Net vision with Adrian Hooke, a JPL scientist who has been working since the early 1990s on adapting cheaper, more efficient Internet-like protocols for space missions.

 The Interplanetary Internet
The problem is that outer space is likely to be as hostile to the networking protocols that underpin the Internet as it is to air breathing humanoids.
Handheld computers and wireless netphones would also benefit from a less chatty protocol, more efficient use of their limited battery power, the ability to cope in noisy environments, and an easier way to send files while on the move.
The idea, eventually, is that separate Internets should exist on Earth, the moon, Mars and so on, connected by gateways that communicate over an interplanetary backbone using new spacefaring protocols.

The idea is to go beyond the Internet site that many people around the world visited last year to follow the Mars Pathfinder's rover on the Red Planet, said Vinton Cerf, widely regarded as a "father" of the Internet.
The devices could be "an orbiting interplanetary gateway which serves future missions and allows us to recreate Internet on an interplanetary scale.'' One of the decisions that planners need to make is whether to add new domain name suffixes such as ".mars'' or ".earth'' to addresses for an interplanetary system, Cerf said.
While the Internet continues to grow rapidly on Earth, "we still have a lot of work to do to cover the planet,'' he said.

The demonstration of communications between NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit and the European Space Agency (ESA) Mars Express orbiter involved the Mars Express transferring commands from Earth to the Rover and then relaying the data from the rover back to Earth.
While the exercise itself was relatively basic, the future applications and developments of an Interplanetary Network are quite exciting and of almost Science Fiction like proportions.
With an Interplanetary Network, nodes could be placed and relay any information between them without the need for direct line of sight to the data’s final destination in the same way conventional routing works now.

 Project Overview
To build a general space Internet architecture that combines differently -challenging parts, our view of the InterPlaNetary Internet is depicted in Figure 1.
It provides a common infrastructure for communications among the Earth, outer-space planets, moons, satellite, and relay stations placed at gravitationally stable Lagrangian points of planets, etc. It includes the data links (direct link or multi-hop paths) between elements with long-haul capabilities, as shown in Figure 2.
InterPlaNetary External Network: It consists of spacecrafts flying in groups in deep space between planets, clusters of sensor nodes, and groups of space stations, etc. Some nodes in the InterPlaNetary External Network also have long-haul communication capabilities.

GCN: When you were at DARPA, did you have any idea what the Internet would look like today Cerf: We had a very clear view of the functionality we wanted from the Internet, including the ability to support command and control, through computers, that was resilient even in the face of nuclear disruption.
Cerf: Actually, I think the current Internet is operating pretty well considering that hundreds of thousands of different operators are effectively cooperating to bring a coherent, global system to the public.
Bob Kahn actually started the internetting project at DARPA in late 1972 or early 1973 and then invited me to work with him on it just after I joined the Stanford faculty.
