The mission consists of a stationary lander and a surface rover known as Sojourner.
The main scientific goal of the mission is to measure the mass, momentum and energy of the solar wind that somehow is transferred into the space environment around the Earth.
Later in the mission, the Wind spacecraft will be inserted into a special halo orbit in the solar wind upstream from the Earth, at the unique distance which allows Wind to always remain between the Earth and the Sun (about 930,000 to 1,050,000 miles, or 1,500,000 to 1,690,000 kilometers, from the Earth).

DS 1, the first mission in NASA's New Millennium program, is powered by an ion engine known as NSTAR, a type of xenon-ion propulsion system.
Among the other devices and techniques successfully tested during the probe's primary mission were an autonomous navigation system, a miniature camera and spectrometer, an ion and electron spectrometer, a solar-energy concentrator array, and experiments in low power electronics.
An extended mission culminating in an encounter with comet Borrelly began in September 1999 but was soon threatened by the failure of the craft's most important navigational instrument, its star tracker, which enabled DS 1 to orient itself relative to stellar patterns.

 Interplanetary
A 413kg interplanetary spacecraft launched on the 24th January 1969 on an Atlas Centaur D from Cape Canaveral, with the mission to study Mars.
The mission proved extremely succesful in the lunar mapping phase, but the astroid fly-by had to be abandoned on its outbound journey due to failure of the propulsion system resulting in uncontrolled spin.
Its mission is to map the lunar surface composition, measure its gravity and magnetic fields, and to investigate the Clementine measurements seeming to indicate the existance of trapped ice on the lunar southern pole.

The Boeing spacecraft for the Mars mission used five modular PPM Nerva nuclear thermal rocket stages to boost several unmanned probes, a manned MEM lander, a MM Mission Module crew compartment, and a biconic EEM Earth Entry Module for re-entry into the earth's atmosphere at the end of the mission.
The missions are broken into various mission classes such as opposition, conjunction, and swingby for Mars, and short-stay and long-stay time mission to Venus.
The mission module total mass was a function of mission time, since consumables and spare parts would vary according to the mission length.

Timescale of missions: Cassini was designed in the early 1980s and the design had to be frozen using components available at that time.
The time scales of spaceflight and mission development require that you freeze a design to allow it to be properly analyzed before it is flown, and then built.
There are investegations and proposals for solar/battery missions, where large solar arrays charge batteries up and instruments and radios are run for a small percentage of the time (minutes or hours a day, depending on the distance from the Sun and the mission).

What is probably surprising to most is that the data from these missions is often publicly available, even in raw form (though the Mars rover data will likely not be publicly available for several months).
The ESA likes to organize its data sets by missions, so choose the field of interest from the task bar at the top (Astrophysics, Planetary Exploration, etc.) and find the probe mission that has information for which you are looking.

The fact that Bioshere2 failed it's primary objective is somewhat of a setback, but if some key elements that caused failure were addressed maybe some the work that was done could be used to setup a system that was close to being self sustainable.
The technology would have to be reinvented as the technology of the Apollo program was abandoned long ago and it would be too huge an effort to try to use it for further missions...
a launcher for interplanetary payloads would have to be developed...
