interracial marriage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The number of interracial marriages involving whites, fls and Hispanics each year in the United States has jumped tenfold since the 1960s, but the older individuals are, the less likely they are to partner with someone of a different race, finds the new study.
In Joyner's study, Hispanics had the highest rate of interracial relationships: 45 percent of 18- to 19-year-olds and 33 percent of 24- to 25-year-olds were in interracial relationships in the early 2000s, compared with fls (20 and 14 percent, respectively) and whites (16 and 12 percent, respectively).
The rate of interracial marriage, however, is still relatively uncommon: in 2002, only 2.9 percent of all marriages were interracial, according to the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

With so many marriages happening in the United States, it is hard to believe that as recently as 1966, 17 states actually had laws against interracial marriage.
Such marriages are now common enough to cause the Census Bureau to consider adding the category "mixed" to its racial classification to describe the children of interracial marriages.
For instance there is a difference in the way women in the east view the marriage relationship and specifically the role of the husband and the wife, and how a marriage is viewed in western thought.

Just as bans on interracial marriage were struck down in the 1960s, she argued, bans on same-sex “marriage” also must fall.
“The interracial marriage ban was clearly built on a history of preserving the idea of racial purity and racial superiority of one race over another,” she told BP.

Children from interracial marriages are no longer denied the same benefits and privileges as the children prior to Loving.

Whites feared that interracial marriage would undermine the assumed superiority of White and Black and the legal foundation for dependency on White men that extended to woman and children as well as to Blacks.

In fact, though, for nearly two centuries the idea that allowing interracial couples to marry is right — both in the eyes of God and in the precepts of the U.S. Constitution — was not obvious to a majority of Americans.
Decreeing that marriage is a “fundamental” civil right, the court told the nation that “the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the state.”
The primary social function of interracial marriage bans was to put a government stamp of approval on the notion that the majority is somehow superior, biologically and morally.

Is interracial marriage right or wrong?
It was not because of racial concerns, but because of religion that the marriages were forbidden; the non-Israelite spouses were causing the Israelites to turn away from God.
So we see that in the Old Testament, God saw to it that interracial marriages did not take place when they threatened the purity of the Abrahamic line that was to inherit the Promised Land.
Instead of the marriage restrictions placed upon the Israelites to maintain a pure line of inheritance, we—the church—will inherit because we are a virgin bride (not defiled with false religion, pictured by sexual purity in Revelation 14:4) espoused to Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:25—27).

Times & Seasons » Interracial Marriage
Race, for the purposes of defining suitable marriage partners, is an arbitrary concept, and unless the church wants to be in the position of assigning racial labels to its members, it can’t really be in the business of proscribing interracial marriages.
Obviously, inter-racial marriage is not in-an-of-itself a sin (or else it wouldn’t be permitted in the temple), and we are left to squabble over the significance of various opinions of it’s advisablity, and scriptural references to skin color.
Anytime a church member expresses a disapproval of interracial marriage, whether in a church meeting or privately, I think it is proper and right to probe the source of that belief and to point out the inconsistencies with the Gospel.

 Interracial Marriage
If interracial marriage is a SIN, the Church must not only FORBID racial intermarriage; it must also require biracial couples to separate, so that they do not continue to live in sin.  There IS precedent in Scripture for breaking up families-- even with children -- when marriage(s) are contrary to Scripture (see Nehemiah).
If interracial marriage is NOT a sin, we must nevertheless instruct God’s people that there are still questions of wisdom, having to do with the very human challenges of marital compatibility, cultural compatibility, and the impact of societal racial prejudices upon couples and upon their children.
In either case, the argument is made by some that interracial marriage was all, or part of, the problem; and by others, that the problem was singularly interreligious.

Laws against interracial marriage--and the taboos against fl-white sex that they codify--have been the central weapon in the oppression of African-Americans since the dawn of slavery.
Virginia began categorizing a child as free or slave according to the mother's status (which was easier to determine than the father's), and so in 1691 the assembly passed a law to make sure that women didn't bear mixed-race children.

Speaking out about their views and experiences, these partners, family members, and children of mixed race marriages confirm that the barriers are gradually eroding; but they also testify to the heartache caused by family opposition and disapproving strangers.
Root traces race prejudice to the various institutions that were structured to maintain white privilege, but the heart of the book is her analysis of what happens when people of different races decide to marry.
Developing an analogy between families and types of businesses, she shows how both positive and negative reactions to such marriages are largely a matter of shared concepts of family rather than individual feelings about race.

Interracial marriage: is it biblical?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
There are a significant number of Christians (particularly in America) who would claim that such 'Interracial' marriages directly violate God's principles in the Bible, and should not be allowed.
When Christians legalistically impose non-biblical ideas such as 'no 'Interracial' marriage' onto their culture, they are helping to perpetuate prejudices that have often arisen from evolutionary influences.
This does not mean that the marriage is not actually valid, nor does it dilute the responsibilities of the marital union – see also 1 Corinthians 7:12-14, where the context is of one partner becoming a Christian after marriage.
