In calendar year 2000 all exit numbers were changed from a sequential numbering system, where numbers moved up in numerical order, to a mile-log numbering system, where the exit numbers correspond to the nearest milepost.
All interstate exit signs were upgraded to "breakaway signs." These signs bend or flex when hit by motorists, lessening the impact to the motorist and the vehicle.
For East-West interstates, the numbers run from west to east, and for North-South interstates, the numbers run from south to north.
