  Interstate 170 Maryland @ Interstate-Guide.com
Interstate 170 opened to traffic in 1979 and originally carried Interstate shields with U.S. 40 remaining on the parallel Franklin and Mulberry Streets.
Interstate 170 in Maryland was a planned spur to downtown Baltimore from Interstate 70 in the Western portion of the city.
However, a small segment of the intended Interstate 170 freeway was constructed near downtown Baltimore.

Maryland is bordered by Pennsylvania on the north, Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Virginia on the south, and West Virginia on the southwest and west.
The region in Maryland is primarily one of farmlands and small rural communities, except for the urbanized areas centered on Baltimore and Washington, D.C., in the west, and Salisbury and Ocean City in the east.
Maryland has a diversity of landscape that is no less than that of larger states, ranging from mountains and lakes in the west to ocean beaches in the east.

Interstate 170 was the planned freeway spur for downtown Baltimore from Interstate 70 to the west.
In approximately 1985, Interstate 170 was decommissioned and U.S. 40 was rerouted onto the short freeway between Greene and Pulaski Streets.
A large mural was painted on the wall of concrete, that was to support unconstructed Interstate 170, to obscure its blight from the surrounding neighborhood.

 Interstate 170
I-170 would have extended 2.3 miles from I-70 in West Baltimore to the western edge of the central business district (CBD).
After that, the portion of I-70 from I-95 to I-170 was still proposed to be built, but would be designated I-595.
The idea of extending I-170 southward, to I-55 and beyond to Lemay Ferry Road, recently surfaced and was dropped.

The Maryland section is known as the Columbia Pike, reflecting its days as a toll road (in some areas, a nearby road is marked "Old Columbia Pike," showing an earlier location of the route).
A report of the Maryland Geological Survey in 1899 mentioned two turnpikes still in operation on the route (the Ellicott City and Clarksville Turnpike, 10 miles, Howard County, and the Washington, Colesville, and Ashton Turnpike, 12.5 miles in Montgomery County).

 High Priority Corridors @ AARoads.com: Interstate 99/U.S. 220/U.S. 15 (Corridor 9)
Interstate 99 is in its present location because it is written into law; in fact, in 1995, Interstate 99 was the only interstate to have its interstate definition written into law (see the NHS Legislation Page; it's really there!).
In Allegany County, Maryland, where U.S. 220 comes into Cumberland, the Democratic Speaker of the Maryland State House of Delegates is lobbying for U.S. 220 to be upgraded to Interstate status through MD to connect with ARC Corridor H, which has just recently been released from an injuction prohibiting construction.
It is cosigned as Interstate 99 and U.S. At Interstate 99's southern end, its connection with the Pennsylvania Turnpike involves signalized intersections (off the mainlines of both Interstate 99 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike).

Interstate 595 (Maryland) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Interstate 595 (abbreviated I-595) is an unsigned number for a section of US 50 (the John Hanson Highway) from the Capital Beltway (I-95/I-495) east of Washington, D.C. to MD 70 at Annapolis, Maryland.
It is the longest unsigned Interstate highway at 20 miles (32 km) in length.
In the early 1980s, the same route number was proposed for a connector in Baltimore from Interstate 95 to what was then called Interstate 170, which was left stranded from the rest of the interstate system by the cancellation of Interstate 70 within the city limits of Baltimore.

Interstate 84 in the western United States would become Interstate 86 between Portland, Oregon and Pocatello, Idaho (as there is already another Interstate 84 in the eastern United States); and Interstate 84 between Interstate 86 and Interstate 15 would become Interstate 17.
Interstate 75 would be extended at its southern terminus to either intersect with Interstate 95 by replacing Florida 924 (Gratigny Parkway) and being extended with new construction to Interstate 95, or by replacing Florida 826 (Palmetto Expressway) south or Miami Lakes to Kendall, or veering off and also replacing Florida 874 (Don Shula Expressway).
Interstate 88 in New York would be extended eastbound to share Interstate 90 into Massachusetts and share Interstate 495 south to the current terminus of Interstate 495.

 MDRoads: I-68
Plans for the National Freeway were first conceived in the 1970s, as a means to enhance access to the far western counties of Allegany and Garrett, which hitherto relied upon US 40 for all east-west travel.
I-68 is touted by Maryland as the 'new route west' by several signs along westbound I-70, an alternative to Breezewood and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
The state originally had no intent to give the National Freeway Interstate status, and planned to leave it as US 48, especially given the substandard 1960s vintage elevated section near Cumberland.

If the term "Interstate 0" could apply to the numerous spurs and connections off the Baltimore region's highways, what other term but "Interstate Double-Zero" would be fitting for a complete highway that barely allows one to reach the speed limit before braking as they encounter the end of the road.
Later, the road would lose it's "Interstate" status, and U.S. Route 40 would be deviated to follow its short course (one edition of an ADC map labeled it as "PIERCE STREET" after the aligning alley in Downtown).
