Interstate 144 was Missouri's July 31, 1958 proposal to AASHO for part of what is now I-270.
Interstate 244 was once the numbering for a 20-mile stretch of today's I-270 between I-55 and I-70 in St. Louis.
The approved numbering plan was then I-255 from the the Illinois line to I-55; I-244 from I-55 to I-70; and I-270 from I-70 to the Illinois line.

Highways 244 and 152 were both christened in 1980 for what seems to be the same purpose: Connecting the nearby interstate (80 and 35, respectively) to a major route (IA 191 and US 69, respectively) at the closest point.
Highway 244 ran directly north and south except at the very northernmost part, where it made a little zigzag right before this picture.
Neil writes, "IA 244 continues a few hundred feet farther south, where L55 turns left, and there is a truck stop driveway to the right." L55 takes a turn where 244 ends, but it is close enough to the ramps that the end location could still be fudged back to the interchange.

Most interstate highways across the country have their exits numbered, to make it easier for travelers to find the correct exit, especially when in unfamiliar territory.
Since the opening of a new stretch of interstate means brand new signs, it was apparently decided to go ahead and put exit numbers on I-244, so they wouldn't have to go back and add them later.
When I-244 was renumbered to the system it has today, and the rest of I-444 was opened up, the number parts of these exit signs were removed, leaving the word "EXIT", and the exit letter, with a big blank space in-between.

The Interstate 244 bridge over Mingo Road in Tulsa appears to be crumbling.
The two inside westbound lanes of I-244 are closed and the northbound lanes of Mingo under the bridge are completely shut down.
It damaged that bridge forcing state transportation officials to shut down the outside eastbound lane of I-244 in the same area as Thursday's incident.
