Interstate 280 (abbreviated '''I-280''') is a 17.85-mile (28.73 km) Interstate Highway, providing a spur from Interstate 80 to Newark, New Jersey and Interstate 95 (the New Jersey Turnpike) and towards the Holland Tunnel to New York City.
As the road returns to surface level, and begins to parallel the New Jersey Transit Morristown Line (former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad main line) to the north, an unused bridge carries the western end of the 1954 section of freeway over the railroad to Orange Street east of Duryea Street.
The New Jersey State Highway Department countered with the proposed Essex Freeway, which would run from Interstate 80 to Interstate 95 via the existing Route 58, saying that the Route 3 corridor "does not meet Interstate standards, and cannot be economically converted to such standards." '''Interstate 280''' was chosen for the freeway in 1958.

Interstate 280, originally known as the Essex Freeway, had its beginnings as NJ 25A, a 1.1-mile-long highway connecting Clifton Avenue in downtown Newark with Grant Avenue in Harrison.
Interstate 280 will provide an expressway to rapidly developing eastern Morris County through the densely populated areas of the Oranges and Newark in Essex County, and heavily industrialized Harrison and Kearny in Hudson County.
The I-280 proposal was part of a never-implemented NJDOT master plan to rebuild the New Jersey Transit-Broad Street Station and provide a separate new vertical lift span for the old Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western (DLandW) Railroad swing bridge.

Interstate 280 opened in 1956 as part of the Toledo-Detroit Expressway, which also included what is now I-75 from the I-280 terminus to US 24 in Flat Rock, Michigan; and a segment south of the Ohio Turnpike, ending at US 20/23.
I-280 ended at the Ohio Turnpike, while the 2-mile segment between the Turnpike and the Fremont Pike (US 23) was redesignated OH 420 in 1970.

In 1977, NJDOT began construction of I-280 and was reported to have removed 9 million gallons of oil-contaminated water and 200,000 to 250,000 cubic yards of oily sludge from the lake.
It is also reported that during the construction of I-280, an underground lake of oil-contaminated ground water was found extending from the eastern limits of the NJDOT right-of-way to Frank's Creek on the west.

Both of these are long overdue to be replaced, and while the NJ 21 interchange is about to be reworked to finally accommodate all traffic movements, the replacement of the old highway is still only a long-term plan.
Also, because basically every street in the Oranges has an overpass over I-280, the sight distance on the highway and to overhead signs is atrocious, so it's easy to miss the one sign with the information you need.
There is NOTHING directing you either to stay on I-280 EB or toward the NJ Turnpike, so if an out-of-county motorist were to try to follow 280, it is more likely he would go straight toward 508 east rather than bear left toward the actual continuation of the highway.
