Interstate 85 (abbreviated I-85) is an interstate highway in the southeastern United States.
Its southern terminus is at an intersection with Interstate 65 in Montgomery, Alabama; its northern terminus intersects with Interstate 95 in Petersburg, Virginia, near Richmond (Map).
Interstate 485 was supposed to have been an east-west connector route in the Atlanta area, but it was erased due to community opposition.

Interstate 285 (abbreviated I-285) is a beltway interstate highway encircling Atlanta, Georgia for 62.77 miles (101.02 km).
I-285 intersects with Interstate 85 in the northeast (Tom Moreland Interchange/"Spaghetti Junction") and southwest, Interstate 75 in the northwest ("Cobb Cloverleaf") and southeast, Interstate 20 (Tom Murphy Freeway/Ralph David Abernathy Freeway/Purple Heart Highway) in the east and west, and Georgia 400 (Turner McDonald Parkway/T. Harvey Mathis Parkway) in the north.
I-285 runs right through the center of Sandy Springs, Georgia which, as recently as 2005, was the most populous unincorporated urban area in the United States.

I-285 is a proposed interstate designation for US 52 between I-85 near Lexington and I-40 in Winston-Salem.
I-285 has a much greater impact than just that of an interstate or a by-pass, it is very much a fabric of everyday life in Metro Atlanta.
I-75 S to I-285 E is made up of a long 90-100 foot high fly-over and the volume of traffic in that area requires some collector distributor ramps to be a wide as 4 lanes going one way.

In calendar year 2000 all exit numbers were changed from a sequential numbering system, where numbers moved up in numerical order, to a mile-log numbering system, where the exit numbers correspond to the nearest milepost.
All interstate exit signs were upgraded to "breakaway signs." These signs bend or flex when hit by motorists, lessening the impact to the motorist and the vehicle.
For East-West interstates, the numbers run from west to east, and for North-South interstates, the numbers run from south to north.

Getting an interstate designation for this highway is part of an effort by Winston-Salem and Davidson County officials to boost economic development in the area.
Though the highway could now be signed by NCDOT as Future I-285 until a project to upgrade the US 52 freeway to interstate standards is complete, it now appears this will not be the case.

A Coweta County resident who worked as a police officer in East Point and a motorist were killed Sunday while they were scuffling on Interstate 285.
The driver of that vehicle began fighting with the two officers, and the scuffle spilled out into the first and second right-hand travel lanes of the interstate, where they were first struck by a minivan, police said.
''She saw the lights, and was moving to the left in order to give (the officers) some room, not knowing they were in the interstate,'' Wright said, adding there are no street lights along that section of I-285.
