Interstate 287 (abbreviated I-287) is a major interstate highway in New Jersey and New York.
Interstate 287 holds an unusual distinction of being a multi-state three-digit interstate whose parent is an intrastate two-digit interstate.
I-287 was to continue past I-95 in Port Chester and was to cross Long Island Sound via the (unbuilt) Oyster Bay-Rye Bridge and absorb the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway (NY 135).

Interstate 787 (abbreviated I-787) is a 10.51 mile (16.91 km) Interstate Highway spur in New York.
Its southern end is at the Exit 23 toll plaza of the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87); its northern end is at the Collar City Bridge in Troy, NY where it connects with New York Route 787 in the city of Cohoes.
At Exit 5 (Mile 3), I-787 connects to Interstate 90, which runs through north Albany to reconnect with the NYS Thruway at Exit 24 and the Adirondack Northway section of I-87 to the west, and to the southeast through Rensselaer County to connect with the Berkshire Spur segment of the NYS Thruway.

The thruway was connected to the rest of the "eastern turnpike complex," the network of pre-Interstate era tollways that were constructed during the 1940's and 1950's in the Northeast and Midwest.
It was not until 1970, when the section of the Thruway between EXIT 8 and EXIT 17 became eligible for Interstate status, that the designation for I-87 was shifted from eastern Westchester County to the mainline, making the entire mainline Interstate 87 from New York City to Albany.
To accommodate current and future demand on the I-287 corridor, a minimum of eight lanes should be provided along the Thruway from EXIT 8 (I-287 / Cross Westchester Expressway) in Elmsford to EXIT 15 (I-287 and NJ 17) in Suffern.
