New Jersey bear hunt will take place, courts rule (phillyBurbs.com) | New Jersey News
Earlier in the day, a state appellate panel ruled that the hunt, New Jersey's second in 35 years, could go forward, saying that opponents had failed to show a hunt would irreparably harm the state's fl bear population.
Hunt opponents told the appellate panel it should be postponed because New Jersey officials don't have accurate information about the bears' numbers and killing too many bears could have long-term negative effects on the population.
Dean Jablowski, deputy state attorney general, told the court the hunt should be held as scheduled because pregnant female bears are in their dens at this time of year and because hunters and residents in the bear-rich northwestern area of the state have planned for the hunt.
