Interstate 395 northbound nears the full-cloverleaf interchange with U.S. 20 (Washington Street) at Exits 6A/B. Through traffic bound for the transition to Interstate 290 east is advised to move to the left lane to avoid the weaving traffic from the Washington Street ramps.
Continuing past the Massachusetts 12 northbound ramp is the split for Interstate 290 east to Worcester and Interstate 395 south to Norwich, Connecticut.
Interstate 290 connects the Mass Pike with Worcester to the north and Interstate 395 with Oxford to the south.

I-290 opened in segments from 1958 through 1970; by that time, its eastern end had been relocated to I-495 in Marlborough.
Eventually the State gave up; DEC's Hudson plant was built in the path of the extension; and DEC agreed to pay for the 2-lane extension (on the proposed I-290 alignment) from I-495 to the new plant.
Dan Moraseski ("SPUI") adds that I-290 extension plans are available at the State Transportation Library; the highway would have either gone to MA 128 at US 20 or to MA 2 south of Concord.

When it was first proposed, the eastern terminus of I-290 was to be at the intersection of the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) and the Outer Circumferential Highway (I-495) in Hopkinton.
EXIT 12 (MA 146 / Brosnihan Square): To accommodate the extension of the MA 146 Expressway (Worcester-Providence Turnpike), the MHD is rebuilding this exit as a partial "trumpet" interchange to permit movement from northbound MA 146 to westbound I-290, and from eastbound I-290 to southbound MA 146.
The I-290 extension from I-495 (Outer Circumferential Highway) in Marlborough to MA 128 (Yankee Division Highway) in Waltham, included in the master plan as the free "Western Expressway," was intended to relieve congestion and serve local traffic in the rapidly expanding suburbs along the US 20 corridor.
