This interstate's southern end is in New Haven, CT at Interstate 95; its northern end is at Derby Line, a village in the town of Derby, VT, at the Canadian border, where it continues as Autoroute 55.
Interstate 91 is 290 miles (466.7 km) long and runs nearly straight north and south through the U.S. states of Connecticut (for 58 miles, 93.3 km), Massachusetts (for 55 miles, 88.5 km) and Vermont (for 177 miles, 284.9 km).

The present east-west interstate highway between… Boston and the New York state line… is obsolete, inadequate, deficient and outmoded from a standpoint of traffic safety, efficiency, public convenience and modern engineering standards.
In 1970, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority widened the original turnpike from EXIT 9 (I-84 / Wilbur Cross Highway) in Sturbridge east to EXITS 14-15 (I-95 / MA 128 / Yankee Division Highway) in Weston.
During the early 1990's, the speed limit on the Massachusetts Turnpike was raised to 65 MPH from the Massachusetts-New York border east to EXIT 10 (I-290 / I-395 / MA 12) in Auburn.

 The Bissell Bridge
The Bissell Bridge, carrying Interstate 291 across the Connecticut River north of Hartford, connects Windsor to South Windsor.
A 1937 plan for extending the Merritt Parkway northeasterly to Massachusetts included split routes over two bridges, one at South Glastonbury and one very near where the Bissell is now.
I-291 was extended to US 5 in 1992, and completed in 1994.

The redevelopment of the abandoned Union Station into an active multi-modal center, championed by congressman Richard Neal and the Pioneer Valley Regional Transit Administration, is at an important crossroads and should be treated by federal and state funding agencies as a top priority.
In addition, the Legislature's idea two years ago to transfer operation and maintenance of Interstate 291 from MassHighway to the Massachusetts Turnpike should be put back on the table.

If you came on to I-291 east from I-91 South or US 20 east, after going on the flyover ramp, this is what you'd see.
This is the terminus of I-291 at the Masspike and Burnett road.
The "Begin 291" sign is a bit late, but that's probably just MassHighway 291, as the 1/4 mile from the exit of the MassPike to this gantry is controlled by the MassPike authority.

The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority board moved yesterday to abolish all tolls on the turnpike west of Route 128, a sudden and sweeping policy shift less than three weeks before Election Day that promises considerable financial relief to thousands of commuters.
That panel is considering proposals to reinstate tolls in Western Massachusetts, between the New York line and Springfield, which were eliminated in 1996, and to increase the gas tax.
One regular commuter was pleased with yesterday's announcement, which would mean savings of $2.70 one-way for a passenger vehicle traveling the 72 miles from Interstate 291 near Springfield to Route 128 near Weston.

The selection of (route) alignment and the extent to which it may be chosen to fit the ground economically, depends upon the geometric design standards adopted for the construction.
